Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, This may sound like a silly question but Im watching Anaheim and Vancouver Monday night and during a stoppage of play, I noticed that when the linesman Brian Mach No. 78, had gone over to help Eddie Lack with a small equipment issue with his chest protector - his fight strap was undone! I thought jerseys must be "tied down" properly at all times. Does this rule not apply to goalies? Thanks for all you do - the best to ever ref the NHL!Rachel Tilton Hi Rachel: Thank you for the kudos. All players of each team must be dressed uniformly with approved design and color of their team uniform. Altered uniforms of any kind, i.e. Velcro inserts, over-sized jerseys, altered collars, etc., will not be permitted. Any player or goalkeeper not complying with this rule shall not be permitted to participate in the game. A players jersey must be "tied down" properly at all times as per rule 9.3. It is very difficult to detect if a player is not properly tied down unless he becomes involved in an altercation. The only time that a penalty applies to a player not properly tied down is if he engages in a fight and his jersey is removed compleetely off his torso, in which case a game misconduct is assessed (46.dddddddddddd3). The exception to this application is when the opponent has been identified as the instigator; a game misconduct shall not be assessed regardless as to whether or not the player (non-instigator) was properly tied down. I have seen players who do not expect to fight (typically skilled players) participate in the game without tying down their jerseys. While this makes little sense, it their prerogative as it is next to impossible for the referee to detect (goalkeeper included). Specific to goalkeepers no inserts or additions are to be added to the standard goalkeeper-cut jersey as produced by the manufacturer unless approved by the League. In addition goalkeepers are not allowed any "tying down" of the sweater at the wrists if it creates a tension across the jersey such that a "webbing effect" is created in the armpit area. No other tie downs are allowed that create a webbing effect." The length of a jersey is illegal if it covers any area between the goalkeepers legs. In short, any excessive material that would provide the goalkeeper with added coverage of his net is not permitted. Unless a goalkeeper intended to fight during the game he would likely not snap the tab on the back of pants. ' ' '

OTTAWA -- It was ugly and costly, but in the end it was a win for the B.C. Lions. A pair of Paul McCallum field goals were enough to lift the Lions to a 7-5 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday night. "It was one of the ugliest games Ive seen in a long time," McCallum said. "Weve got a lot of work to get going the way we should. When you hold a team to that few points your defence is doing well, but offensively you have to do better as a team." It was also a successful return to action for Lions quarterback Travis Lulay -- at least until the last minute of the game, when Lulay left the field clutching his shoulder with 46 seconds remaining. Lulay, who completed 18 of 27 passes for 167 yards on Friday, was making his first start in almost a year after injuring his throwing shoulder in a goal-line collision last September. "Hes being evaluated by the doctors," Lions coach Mike Benevides said of Lulay, who wasnt made available to the media after the game. "Well find out more as the night goes on." Added running back Andrew Harris: "Honestly my heart sunk to my stomach. The guy had battled back so hard and he plays with so much heart." The team had hoped the six-year veteran would be ready following off-season shoulder surgery, but his first start didnt come until the Lions (6-4) 10th game. Lulay used his feet more than his arm in the win as he was the games leading rusher with 50 yards in his return to action. Though the Lions seemed happy with the outcome of the game, Harris said he certainly was not pleased with the way it came about. "When youre frustrated you have to be able to make plays. I dont miss balls but I jumped up and misjudged it and dropped it," Harris said of a third-quarter incompletion. "But it was a whole offensive failure. It was a team thing and as an offence we should all be embarrassed." The Redblacks (1-9) defence kept Lulay and the Lions out of the end zone all night, but the Redblacks offence struggled once again, getting just a field goal. "Weve got all the tools here, we just need to use them and both sides of the ball we need to get better, no matter what," Redblacks defensive back Matt Albright said. "Were right there. We know it and we just have to push through it. You can never give up in football and its time to step up." The Redblacks had their chances throughout the game. Henry Burris completed 21 of 32 passes for 188 yards and an interception. Midway through the fourth quarter, Ottawa took possession of the football before a torrential downpour along with a strong easterly wind ensued. The Redblacks persevered and managed to get into field goal range, where a successful attempt would have given them a one-point lead with four-and-a-half minutes to play. Holder Danny OBrien couldnt handle the wet ball on the snap though, and the Redblacks turned the ball over on downs. "With the rain driving like that you keep thinking the odds are against us, but we just have to keep working," said Redblacks receiver Marcus Henry, who finished with four catches and 51 yards. Moments later, the referee suspended play due to lightning in the area. Play resumed after a 21-minute delay. The Lions used up all but 30 seconds on the clock and the Redblacks failed to gain any ground in the dying moments. Earlier in the half, punter Ricky Schmitt booted a 69-yard single for a 7-5 B.C. lead. The first half began and ended with fields, one by each side as the Lions went into the break with a 6-5 lead. On the opening drive of the game, the Redblacks used two completions to get into field goal range before Maher connected from 35 yards to give the Redblacks a 3-0 lead. The big play of the drive was a 26-yard completion to Henry, one of 13 completions for Burris in the first half. The Redblacks did have some success moving the ball in the second quarter but an interception by Burris early in the quarter was returned 34 yards by Dante Marsh to the Ottawa 51-yard line. Five plays later, McCallum kicked a 49-yard field goal to tie the game. On the next series, a couple of elusive moves by Burris, a third down conversion and a B.C. penalty gave the Redblacks a first-and-goal on the Lions eight-yard line. After hauling in a Burris pass though, Chevon Walker fumbled and the Lions took over on their own one-yard line. "Theres some plays we could have made in (that drive) better. But (Walker) was just trying to make a play to get in the end zone and ended up getting hurt on it," Henry said. "Well find a way to push us over the edge." The Redblacks defence tackled Harris in his end zone for a safety and a 5-3 Redblacks lead. McCallums 34-yard field goal on the last play of the half got the Lions their first lead of the game. A visit to Buffalo might provide the Montreal Canadiens with an ideal opportunity to bounce back from a loss in which they were shut out again. The Canadiens can do so with a seventh consecutive victory over the lowly Sabres on Friday night in the opener of a home-and-home set. You can listen to all the action on TSN Radio 690 Montreal starting at 5:30pm et/2:30pm pt. The Habs might try out a new look on the power play for the game, using just one defenceman and four forwards. Montreal experimented with the idea Thursday at practice, hoping it would improve their 25th (12.7 per cent) ranked power play. The 1-3-1 format would have one forward placed behind the net and the other three positioned midway between the blue line and the lone player behind the net. The defenceman would man the middle of the blue line. Montreal (16-6-1) leads the Eastern Conference by a point over Pittsburgh, the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay, so its understandable that Michel Therriens team isnt too concerned about losing for the second time in 10 games, 5-0 to the New York Rangers on Sunday. A game like this leaves you scratching your head, defenseman P.K. Subban said. We will be fine. Were still a very positive group. We have to generate more. We just didnt play our game. The Canadiens, who outscored St. Louis and Boston 6-1 to win their previous two contests, have been blanked in their last three losses and four times this season. Dustin Tokarski made 29 saves while stepping in for Carey Price, who faced 65 shots over the previous two games and recorded his second shutout in Saturdays hard-fought 2-0 win over the Bruins. I dont think we want to use (being tired) as an excuse, Subban told the NHLs official website. Montreal has hardly needed to justify its play while outscoring the Sabres 17-5 in the last six meetings. P.A. Parenteau had a goal and also scored in the shootout as the Canadiens recorded their fourth straight victory at Buffalo, 2-1 on Nov. 5. Parenteau has one point in his last five games, but three goals and eight assists in his last 12 against the Sabres. Price, who watched Tokarski stop 31 shots Nov. 5, has a 1.00 goals-against average with one shutout during his three-game winning streak against the Sabres (6-14-2). Buffalo scored 12 goals during a three-game winning streak that ended with Wednesdays 2-1 home loss to Winnipeg. Curtis Stewart scored in the third period, but the Sabres allowed the Jets to score on the power play and short-handed. The first period or first period-and-a-half or so, I thought our hands were handling the puck like a grenade, coach Ted Nolan said. And then all of a sudden in the third period, we played the way we have to play in order to be successful. I think the biggest message here, we have to play like that for 60 minutes. Buffalo failed to convert any of its four power-play chances, including a five-minute opportunity in the second period during which the Jets scored the decisive goal. The Sabres are last in the league at 6.3 percent (4 of 64) with the man advantage. They are 1 for 14 in their last six against Montreal, though that goal was Drew Staffords tying tally in the third earlier this month. Stafford is second on the team with 12 points, but has none in three games. Buffalo could be without defenseman Tyler Myers for a second straight game due to a lower-body injury. He was feeling good and then all of a sudden the injury just kind of went south on him, Nolan said. Blaise Matuidi Jersey . Paul, MN (SportsNetwork. SAN FRANCISCO -- All-Star Scott Kazmir capped the best first-half of his career with one of his best starts yet. Kazmir struck out nine in seven scoreless innings to help the Oakland Athletics win the annual Bay Bridge series by beating the San Francisco Giants 6-1 on Thursday. "I felt good from pitch one," Kazmir said. "I felt comfortable. I was able to get some quick outs and use all of my pitches." Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer and Stephen Vogt drove in three runs for the As, who won three of four in the two-city series that began Monday night in Oakland. The As (58-34) have won seven of eight overall and have matched the best start in Oakland history. Tim Hudson (7-6) was unable to make it out of the sixth inning and lost his fourth straight decision for the floundering Giants. San Francisco has lost 15 of its past 19 home games and hasnt won consecutive games here in more than a month. "Were not playing nearly the kind of baseball we want to play, for sure," Hudson said. "We just have to improve in a number of different areas." The game ended on a replay review when As manager Bob Melvin challenged a call that Vogt pulled his foot off first base on an infield hit by Gregor Blanco. The replay showed Vogt kept his foot on the bag, leading to the final out. Kazmir (11-3) got the best of a heralded matchup against Hudson, allowing three hits and one walk. Kazmir has allowed one run or fewer in 11 of 19 starts this season for a 2.38 ERA. He is just two wins shy of matching his career best set in 2007 in Tampa Bay. "The way he moves feet and moves eyes and dots up the corners and gets people to chase pitches is really remarkable," Vogt said. "Hes doing such a great job." Kazmir retired the first eight batters before walking Hudson and didnt allow a hit until Michael Morses leadoff single to centre in the fifth. Kazmir struck out Brandon Belt and Brandon Hicks before Blanco doubled Morse to third base to snap a 19 at-bat hitless streak. Hudson then hit a drive to deep left-centre that Craig Gentry ran down on the warning track for an inning-ending catch. The As broke the game open in the top of the sixth when they put together four straight extra-base hits to open the inning against Hudson, including a two-run homer by Donaldson over the right-field wall. Donaldsons 20th homer came the same day he was picked to participate in the Home Run Derby at the All-Star game next week. "Its definitely pretty neat," he said. "It will be one of those things that adds icing to the cake. Hopefully Ill be able to put on a show." Vogt added a two-run single off Javier Lopez to give the As a 6-0 lead. Vogt also drove in a run earlier when he singled in the fifth following John Jasos two-out triple to make it 2-0. This marked the first time Hudson allowed four straight extra-base hits, according to STATS LLC. "That sixth inning got away from me a little bit, a couple bad pitches that they took advantage of," Hudson said. "They hit a couple decent pitches, I thought. It was a little bit of a weird inning. It kind of unraveled on us a little bit." Hudson allowed six runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings and lost for the second time in his career against the As. Hudson spent the first six years of his career in Oakland and has beaten every team in the majors except the As and Atlanta. The Giants finally got on the board in the eighth when Pablo Sandoval hit an RBI single off Dan Otero. NOTES: As All-Star OF Yoenis Cespedes went 0 for 5 with four Ks and hit into a double play. ... Now in its 10th season, Real Salt Lake has made the playoffs the last six years, winning the MLS Cup in 2009. Until overtaken in the MLS record books early last year, Real Salt Lake held the league mark for consecutive home wins at 29. Rio Tinto Stadium was an impregnable fortress from June 2009 to May 2011. Toronto (2-0-0 this season) has a 1-5-0 lifetime record in Sandy, Utah. RSL (1-0-2 this season) was also the first MLS team to reach the CONCACAF Champions League final, losing to Monterrey 3-2 on aggregate in 2011. Last season Real Salt Lake made it to two finals but lost both: beaten in the MLS Cup by Sporting Kansas City in an agonizing penalty shootout and 1-0 by D.C. United in the U.S. Open Cup. There has been stability on the sidelines with Jeff Cassar, who has been with the team since May 2007, moving up the ladder to head coach last December after Jason Kreis became the first head coach of New York City FC. Cassar is the third head coach in RSL history. Toronto was on coach No. 5 in Year 4 and is currently on its eighth manager in Ryan Nelsen. RSL captain Kyle Beckerman arrived in 2007 in a trade from the Colorado Rapids. The midfielder with the distinctive dreadlocks credits coaching and a little luck for the franchises success. "We were able to get players into this team that were ready to be coached by a coach like Jason and Jeff Cassar and Robin Fraser (a former RSL assistant coach who is now with the New York Red Bulls)," he said Thursday. "It just so happened that we were able to get a group of guys together that ... really just needed a good environment -- an ownership that cared, a coaching staff that did the right thing. A lot of the guys were coming from places that didnt do the game right. "A lot of us, that core group thats still here, it was a breath of fresh air that we really needed. And we just took full advantage because we knew exactly the opportunity that was in front of us, because wed had it the opposite way, where the owner doesnt care or the coach just doesnt get it. "So I think we lucked out a little bit that we had the core in the same place, here in Salt Lake, tthat was just absolutely ready to explode and take full advantage of what was in front of us.dddddddddddd And thats what we did." The 31-year-old Beckerman is joined on the team by fellow U.S. internationals Nick Rimando (a goalie who came on board in 2007) and Luis Gil (a midfielder who joined in 2010). Other veterans include defenders Nat Borchers (2008) and Chris Wingert (2007), midfielders Ned Grabavoy (2009) and Javier Morales (2007) and forwards Robbie Findley (two stints since 2007) and Alvaro Saborio (2010). Players want to come to winning clubs. And RSL does a good job checking out new talent. "They want to bring in not only good players but good people," said Beckerman. Toronto FC has followed the same road this off-season, with marquee signings Jermain Defoe, Michael Bradley, Gilberto and Julio Cesar all fitting in. Beckerman acknowledges that he respects Torontos search for success. "The thing that I really admire about Toronto is that they wont stop. Theyve kept at it. Theyve kept trying to fix and get the right recipe. And it doesnt seem like theyre going to stop any time soon. Theyre going to keep going and keep spending until they get the right recipe. "And I admire that. Thats something a lot of other teams would love to have that. With the fan base, theyve been loyal there and theyve stuck with them through tough times. The ownership and what theyre doing there, is kind of a reward to that loyalty and giving them a successful team. "Time will tell if this is the right one. But it seems so far that theyve brought in the right players so far. So I think its definitely on the up and up over there." Like Toronto, the early days were bleak in Salt Lake. The team went 5-22-5 with just 20 points in its inaugural season in 2005. In 2005-06, the fledgling franchise endured a league-record 18-game winless streak. But it didnt take long for Real Salt Lake to turn the corner. It had 39 points in Season 2 and 40 in Season 4, going 10-10-10 and reaching the 2008 playoff semifinals. In 2009, it was another 40-point season and the 11-12-7 team went on to win the title. Since then, RSL has collected 56, 53, 57 and 56 points. In contrast, Torontos points total since entering the league in 2007 is 25, 35, 39, 35, 33, 23, and 29. The two teams meet Saturday. ' ' '

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Sharks are bringing back coach Todd McLellan and general manager Doug Wilson for another season despite another early playoff flop. Owner Hasso Plattner said Wednesday he was accepting Wilsons recommendation to keep McLellan after the Sharks became just the fourth NHL team ever to lose a best-of-seven playoff series after winning the first three games. "I am very disappointed in the way our team finished the 2013-14 season," Plattner said in a statement. "Gaining a 3-0 series advantage and being unable to advance is a major blow to our organization and fan base. Our teams have been consistently built to go deep into the playoffs and this goal wont change. "Doug Wilson and I have met over the past two weeks. He has shared his support of the coaching staff, as well as his recommended changes to our teams roster, and he has my complete support moving forward." Plattner also thanked fans for their support and said he is not satisfied with the performance the past few seasons and believes a plan is in place to improve on those results. "I am confident that with the proposed changes, Doug and his staff will build a team we can all be proud of," Plattner said. The Sharks have a 271-130-57 record in six seasons under McLellan, posting the second-most wins in the NHL in that span to Pittsburgh. San Jose made back-to-back conference finals under McLellan, losing in four games to Chicago in 2010 and in five games the following season to Vancouver. The Sharks have won only one playoff series in McLellans other four seasons, losing in the first round to Anaheim in 2009, St. Louis in 2011 and Los Angeles this season. San Jose swept Vancouver in the first round in 2013 before losing a seven-game series to the Kings. Wilson became general manager in May 2003 and has built playoff teams every season. The Sharks have the second-most points in the regular season the past 10 seasons but are still looking for their first Stanley Cup appearance. The Sharks have most of their key pieces under control for next season after signing captain Joe Thornton and all-time leading goal scorer Patrick Marleau to three-year extensions in January. The most prominent unrestricted free agent is 37-year-old defenceman Dan Boyle. Forwards Bracken Kearns and Mike Brown, defenceman Scott Hannan and backup goalie Alex Stalock are the other unrestricted free agents. Mr. Fraser, In the PIT/NYR Round 2 series, there have been two separate occasions where Marc Staal has taken blatant shots to the head of Pittsburghs Sidney Crosby. In Game 3, Staal hit Crosby with a viscous crosscheck to the back of the head. I was shocked that a penalty wasnt even called on the ice! The league then came out the following day and said that no punishment would be handed down for the hit. The following night, in Game 4, Staal again went after Crosbys head. This time it was a blatant elbow. Again, it was from behind, to the back of the head, nearly knocking the helmet off Crosbys head. Again, there was no call on the ice, and no action taken by the league. Can you explain to me how the league and officials, in this era of "no tolerance" for hits to the head, can allow this kind of thing to go on? How can there be no call on the ice? Obviously, since there was no action for the league, or penalty called, in Game 3, Staal figured he was cleared to do it again in Game 4. I mean, if the NHL doesnt care about the well-being of its marquee players, why should Staal? Thanks for listening. Any light you can shed on this subject would be great! John Waclo John: The cross-check that Marc Staal delivered on Sidney Crosby was well beyond just a minor infraction (Video link) and worthy of at least a five-minute major and game misconduct. This aggressive cross-check delivered to the head area could not be considered an effort by a defensive player to contain, engage in a battle in battle or to clear an opponent from the front of the net. The blow did not start at the name plate on the back of the jersey and thhen rode up to the neck and back of the helmet.dddddddddddd This forceful, full-arm extension cross-check went directly to the back of the neck/head of Crosby and should be considered an attempt to injure and worthy of a match penalty under rule 59.4. For the sake of argument lets reverse the body position of Crosby where he and Staal are face-to-face. If that same force is delivered to the neck and chin of Sid he will most likely be spitting blood, chicklets and perhaps even incur another broken jaw. I would sincerely hope that a match penalty would be assessed in that case and a player would be suspended for cross-checking an opponent in the face! I see a deliberate and forceful cross-check to the back of a players neck and head to be similarly dangerous regardless of the fact it was delivered on a player with a well-documented history of concussions. If you want to see an "old school" hit take a look at the major and game misconduct I assessed to Darian Hatcher in a game in Dallas just prior to the playoffs, when he delivered an elbow to the face of Jeremy Roenick. Roenicks jaw was dislocated, broken in three places and he had eight teeth cracked or broken. Roenick approached me on the ice spitting blood and teeth with his jaw wagging in the breeze as he attempted to say, "He broke my f----n jaw!" Hatcher was suspended for seven games (including the Stars first five playoff games) by Colin Campbell for the illegal hit. See it here. John, you ask how these types of plays can be missed. The answer is there are too many "puck watchers" wearing stripes in these playoffs. Player safety is placed in jeopardy when these aggressive fouls are allowed to go un-penalized. This isnt "old school" officiating; just a lack of awareness. ' ' '

Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk both came inches away from firing holes-in-one at the Postage Stamp during the second round of The Open at Royal Troon. LOUIS -- Bosnia-Herzogovina made its second appearance in St. Louis in six months. This time, it gave its large, raucous local fan base plenty to cheer about. Edin Dzeko scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast on Friday night in the run-up to the countrys first World Cup appearance. "We knew they were going to be a powerful team with good pace and they showed that," goalkeeper Asmir Begovic said. "It was a good test for us to play against a good team and we enjoyed it." Its estimated more than 30,000 Bosnians relocated to St. Louis from the former war-torn Yugoslavia, and the games have provided an opportunity to display national pride. Argentina shut out the national team 2-0 in November across downtown at Busch Stadium. "It was the engagement, Im happy with the way they were involved in the game," coach Safet Susic said through an interpreter. "The last time they left disappointed, not in the result, in the way they played." Long-time Ivory Coast standout Didier Drogba scored on a free kick in the 91st minute. The 36-year-old Drogba did not start but had another good scoring chance after entering in the second half. "The coach needs to see everyone before he makes his decisions," Drogba said. "I feel good. I was working out, I was injured a few weeks ago and I worked hard to come back to fitness. Im pretty happy with what Im doing at the moment." Drogba was almost apologetic about getting the free kick, said it was "not a good reason." The attendance was 14,101, less than half thee turnout for the Argentina match and more than 50,000 shy of capacity at the Edward Jones Dome while the Cardinals-Giants game was sold out.dddddddddddd Virtually all of the fans were near field level and Bosnian supporters concentrated behind the net defended by team in the first half did their best to make up for the low numbers, chanting and singing songs to an incessant drum beat. Fans hurled numerous smoke bombs and some flares, too, in the vicinity of Ivory Coast goalkeeper Sylvain Gbouhouo in the second half. Gbouhouo tossed them aside when he had the chance while clouds accompanied by an acrid odour hung over the pitch. "It is something which is normal for us, for our supporters," Susic said. "We have had more." A grass field at the dome, where the Rams play on field turf, was installed earlier in the week for the game. Crews began digging it out a little more than an hour after the game ended. Dzeko, a striker for Manchester City and Bosnias top offensive threat, scored 10 of the countrys 30 goals in World Cup qualifying. Dzeko had an empty net in the 17th minute after an Ivory Coast defender blocked a shot by Zvjezdan Misimovic. He corralled a hard pass from Miralem Pjanic in the 53rd minute and scored just inside the left post. Bosnian forward Vedad Ibisevic, who played at Saint Louis University, was a reserve and entered in the 60th minute. Susic said Ibisevic didnt start because he didnt want two offensive players at forward. Next week, Bosnia plays Mexico in Chicago and Ivory Coast plays El Salvador in Frisco, Texas. ' ' '

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- For the second consecutive night, the Memphis Grizzlies slowed down Houston and walked away with a win. Mike Conley scored 17 points, Zach Randolph had 15 points and 17 rebounds, and the Grizzlies nearly held the Rockets to their lowest output of the season in a 99-81 victory Saturday. "We tried to slow them down," Randolph said. "They like to get up and down the court. They like to run and gun. We just tried to get back and play and get stops." The formula was similar to Friday, when the Grizzlies won 88-87 in Houston, but this time Memphis took control early. The Grizzlies held the Rockets to 37 per cent shooting and built the lead to as many as 27 points before both teams sent in reserves to finish the game. Courtney Lee also had 15 points and Kosta Koufos scored 14, hitting seven of his eight shots from the field. James Johnson added 12 points for Memphis and Nick Calathes had a season-high 11. James Harden led the Rockets with 16 points, and Chandler Parsons scored 11. Dwight Howard had 10 points and 12 rebounds, but Houstons three-game road winning streak was snapped. "The last two games weve been terrible offensively," Parsons said. "Their pace works for them. They make you play a half-court offence. They are physical. They grab. They reach. They hold. When you do that so much, they are not going to call every single foul." Memphis bench outscored the Rockets reserves 44-27. The Grizzlies also had a 56-32 advantage in the paint and a 52-38 edge on the boards. The Grizzlies, as they did Friday, controlled the pace of the game, holding Houston to its second-lowest scoring output this season. Houstons season low was 80 points on Jan. 10 at Atlanta. Rockets coach Kevin McHale said before the game that Houston needed a score in the 100s to overcome Memphis deliberate, grind-it-out pace. That game plan went awry when the Rockets, who entered averaging 105.5 points, managed only 14 in the first quarter. "They beat us. Bottom line," McHale said. "They beat us (Friday) night, and they beat us up again (Saturday). They got offensive rebounds. They moved the ball. They caught us being stagnant, and they were better than us by far." Memphis extended its 11-point halftime lead by outscoring the Rockets 25-19 in the third quarter. Lee had nine points in the period and Harden scored 10 for the Rockets, limited to five field goals out of 21 shots. Three of those baskets were by Harden. From there, Memphis stretched the lead to 27 midway through the fourth, and McHale began sending in his backups. Parsons, who connected on 10 shots from 3-point range Friday, finished 1 of 6 from long range, part of the Rockets going 9 of 32 from 3-point territory. Memphis has won 12 of its last 17 and is 5-1 since Marc Gasol returned from a knee injury. Several Grizzlies said the team appears on the verge of regaining the identity it had during recent playoff runs. "Were ready to win and we prepare like we want to win," Johnson said. "We travel like we want to win, and everybody is holding each other accountable. When you put those things together, we beat teams bad." NOTES: Since moving to Memphis, the only other time the Grizzlies played a home-and-home set on back-to-back nights was in 2006 against the Dallas Mavericks. ... Randolph played his 300th game for the Grizzlies and posted his 189th double-double, tying Pau Gasols total with the team. ... The Rockets were held under 90 points for the sixth time this season. Chelsea earned its biggest league victory under Jose Mourinho after the leaders raced into a 2-0 lead in just seven minutes through goals from Samuel Etoo and Andre Schuerrle. "You come to kill and in 10 minutes we destroyed," Mourinho said. "After that? Easy." Not for the referee, as Andre Marriner provided the London derbys big talking point by sending off the wrong Arsenal player after 15 minutes. Although Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain blatantly handled to keep out Eden Hazards shot, it was Kieran Gibbs who was dismissed despite his teammates protests. "Andre is disappointed that he failed to identify the correct player," the league referees body said in a statement. "He expressed his disappointment to Arsenal when he was made aware of the issue." Hazard scored Chelseas third from the resulting penalty, Oscar netted twice and Mohamed Salah completed Wengers misery with his first goal for the leaders. Arsenal saw its title ambitions seriously dented as it fell seven points behind Chelsea, and dropped to fourth. "Its one of the worst days (in my career)," Wenger said. "Its over after 20 minutes and its a long game after that." After the humiliation Wenger did not attend the mandatory post-match news conference, with Arsenal media chief Mark Gonnella saying the team bus had to leave while Mourinho was addressing reporters. The Frenchman couldnt get away quick enough after another gloomy landmark day at Stamford Bridge. His 500th game in charge also saw Arsenal lose at Chelsea, albeit onnly 1-0 in 2005.dddddddddddd The margin of this defeat matched the previous low-point of Wengers 18-year reign -- an 8-2 loss at Manchester United. It was also Arsenals third big away loss against its direct title rivals this season, following a 6-3 defeat at Manchester City and 5-1 drubbing at Liverpool. And the humbling only served to justify Mourinhos recent gibe that Wenger is a "specialist in failure" as the Frenchman went an 11th game without beating his Portuguese rival. Only five minutes after scoring the opening goal in the fifth, Etoo was forced off injured and replaced by Fernando Torres. "Arsene Wenger, we want you to stay," Chelsea fans taunted with a quick 2-0 lead. Then Hazards shot was tipped away, not by Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, but by Oxlade-Chamberlain. Despite the clearest of diving saves by an outfield player, Marriner somehow managed to identify Gibbs as the offender despite Oxlade-Chamberlain being seen admitting to the referee: "It was me." The one-game suspension is still set to be served by Oxlade-Chamberlain. Hazard scored from the penalty spot and there was no way back for Arsenal. Just before halftime, Schuerrle released Torres, who squared into the centre for Oscar to scoop in from close range. Oscars second in the 66th was in part down to a goalkeeping blunder as Szczesny allowed his curling shot from outside the area to slip through his hands. Szczesny allowed Salahs shot to roll under him four minutes later to cap an all-around dismal performance by the visitors. "This defeat is my fault, I take full responsibility for it," Wenger said. "I dont think theres too much need to talk about the mistakes we made. We got a good hiding today." ' ' '

EDMONTON -- Edmonton Rush captain Jimmy Quinlan announced his retirement Friday, ending his career as the longest-serving player of the National Lacrosse League team. Quinlan will remain on the Rush bench for the 2014 NLL season as an assistant coach in charge of the clubs defence. The Sherwood Park, Alta., native will replace Devan Wray, who leaves the team due to family commitments. "Deciding to walk away from the game of lacrosse was not an easy choice, but the opportunity to move into a coaching role is something I have always wanted to do which makes the decision easier." Quinlan said in a statement. Quinlan joined the Rush for its inaugural season after one year with the Toronto Rock. He went on to become Edmontons captain for his final two years with the team. He finishes as the second-leading scorer in team history with 219 points. Quinlans lone goal in the 2013 campaign allowed him to reach the 100-career goal plateau. WINNIPEG - With their season hanging by a thread, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers can at least look forward to the return of their regular starting quarterback on Saturday.Drew Willy looked good in practice Tuesday after missing last weeks game due to injuries.More than that, I liked what he said, coach Mike OShea said after practice. He said hell be fine. The Blue Bombers (6-10) will try to end a seven-game losing skid on Saturday against the B.C. Lions (8-7). Winnipeg will be eliminated from playoff contention with another defeat as the Lions are four points ahead in the race for the crossover spot in the CFL West.Even if Winnipeg wins, the Blue Bombers would need a lot of help for a playoff spot to be possible. They would also need to beat the CFL-leading Calgary Stampeders and hope for a combination of B.C. and Toronto losses. The Lions would need to lose their final two and the Argonauts (6-9) would have to lose two of their final three. But first, the Bombers have to win, something they havent managed to do since Aug. 22.We know weve got a good B.C. team coming in here, Willy said after practice Tuesday. Their defence has been playing really well lately. Theyre not giving up touchdowns. And the Bombers havent been scoring them.Weve got to work extremely hard this week in the red zone to be efficient, he said. Weve been struggling in the red zone for sure at this part of the season so weve got to make sure were executing at all phases.Willy added he would be good to go unless I wake up so sore tomorrow that I can hardly grip the ball. His most nagging injury has been to his throwing hand. Its been a season of highs and lows for Willy in his rookie year as a starting CFL quarterback. He was signed away from the Saskatchewan Roughriders, where he was the No. 1 backup. His personal numbers have looked good and he led the team to a great start before their victory drought. Willy has battled with Toronto veteran Ricky Ray for the lead in passing yards for much of the season. The Blue Bombers, who were 3-15 last year, looked to be a much-improved team at the seasons midway point. But a 35-30 loss to Saskatchewan on Aug. 31 started Winnipegs tailspin and the team has been unable to recover.Making things worse was the move to the much stronger West Division with the Ottawa Redblacks arrival in the East this season.Winnipeg won five of its first six, the only loss a rather humbling 26-3 debacle at the hands of the Edmonton Eskimos that was an early warning sign of the trouble ahead. Most of those early wins were against weak East teams and some games were very close. The backbreaker for the Bombers was probably a 42-20 road loss to the lowly Redblacks earlier this month — it was Ottawas second win this season. There were signs of life in the Bombers last game against the Stampeders but Winnipeg still dropped a 33-23 decision.Veteran offensive lineman Glenn January could come off the injured list Saturday. The Blue Bombers have gone with Paris Cotton as the starting running back after the release of Nic Grigsby.Grigsby was the teams leading rusher this season but asked for his release last week after being told he would be a backup. He later signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Gerald Everett Womens Jersey . TIM HARDAWAY, JR (Knicks): Picked 24th by New Yorks former GM, Glen Grunwald (honestly, what is owner James Dolan thinking firing him?) is a gem. Saw him on Friday night vs. the Raptors. I was very impressed with him. Hes got nice shooting mechanics and plays with great energy and awareness. Played for a terrific college coach at Michigan (John Beilein) who is one of the best in the business at teaching offensive fundamentals and obviously his dad, Tim, Sr. was a wonderful player. He really jumped out at me. Hell be playing for a winning team and will have to earn every minute he gets which is a good thing - it will make him a better pro in the long run. If first impressions matter he made a positive one, thats for sure. 2. GREG ODEN (Heat): Practiced for the first time 5-on-5 on Sunday and got through it okay. Fingers crossed hes able to practice/play consistently. Frustrating start to his NBA career with a rash of injuries. The positive is that the Heat need him in a secondary capacity and hell be brought along slowly and eased in. In addition, hell be held accountable by coach Erik Spoelstra, president Pat Riley and a team with good internal leadership - you had better be in shape, do your work and be professional or else. Its an environment that is conducive to a gradual step in the right direction for him if he can stay healthy. 3. NIKOLA PEKOVIC (Timberwolves): Man this guy is a beast. What a load to move in the lane. Felt bad for the Raptors big men watching them try to battle with him last week. When he gets to his spot on the floor - good luck moving him. Hes developed into a nice player and when you look around the league there will be nights that hell have his way in the lane with smaller/weaker bigs in the paint. He has no back down and is a relentless rebounder and improving offensive feature for coach RRick Adelman.dddddddddddd. 4. DEMAR DEROZAN (Raptors): I have been impressed with him and his approach from the start of Training Camp. Definitely stronger and seems to know what works for him and playing the game at an efficient pace. Ive always respected his mature approach. He loves the game and works at his craft diligently. Hes playing with a greater degree of toughness in the lane and attacking his opponent and working harder to draw fouls and get to the free throw line. Obviously, the Raptors have played only four preseason games so the sample size is very small but he is on the right track. Stay on it and keep improving. People talk a lot about his three-point shooting needing to improve. I totally agree. Lets be real though. Hell never be confused even at his best with Ray Allen. Hes a slasher with great explosiveness and increased strength whose biggest positive is getting to the rim. Play to your strengths - be who you are. 5. ANDREW WIGGINS (University of Kansas): Got my Sports Illustrated in the mailbox and see him on the cover. The hype is ratcheting up even further. What expectations and pressure on this young man. Happy that hes getting the PR and its an exciting time for the growth of Canadian basketball yet I always worry when too much is thrown at a young player. Thrilled for him yet the attention unnerves me. Most times it creates distractions that they cant live up to. Im hopeful that he has the emotional maturity/makeup to handle all of this. I wish he could ease into this a bit more. With the accelerated pace of development of players these days its hard for a player to experience the much needed growing pains that shape your character and improve you as a player. Easy does it is not the mode anymore and it can crush a guy. Based upon what Ive seen he looks like a guy that will get through it all just fine. ' ' '

Brasilia, Brazil - Brazil will still be trying to make sense of its semifinal implosion on Saturday when the team faces the Netherlands in the third-place match at the Estadio Nacional de Brasilia. Listen to all the action live on TSN 1050, TSN 690, TSN 1200, and TEAM 1410 beginning at 4pm et/1pm pt. The hosts were embarrassed by Germany, 7-1, in Tuesdays semifinal as the Germans scored five times in the span of 18 minutes in the first half on their way to the dominant win. Brazils players and coaches were sort of at a loss to explain the destruction after the match, but head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is hopeful his men can still end the World Cup on a winning note. "I know my career will be marked by this defeat, but we have an obligation to move on and think about the next goal, which in this case is the match for third place on Saturday in Brasilia," Scolari said. "I know its a much smaller dream than we all wanted, but we have to honor the shirt of the national team." In addition to Neymar missing the Germany match because of injury, Brazil was also without captain Thiago Silva through suspension and his absence in the middle of the Selecaos defense was very evident. Brazil was booed off the field at halftime of the semifinal with the team trailing 5-0, but Silva is hopeful that the fans can help to lift the players for one last match at this tournament. "This is a bad time so we need strength from our fans," said Silva, who will be eligible to return to the lineup for Saturdays fixture. "I guarantee that we will play this Saturdays game like it was the final." The Netherlands came extremely close to returning to the World Cup final as the Dutch lost on penalty kicks to Argentina following a 0-0 match through 120 minutes. After reaching the final in 2010 and losing in extra time to Spain, it will certainly be tough for Louis van Gaals team to lift themselves for Saturdays contest. The Oranje saw Argentina score on each of its four penalty kick attempts, while Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder both saw their shots saved by Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero. "It does hurt [to lose this way], especially if you are one of the players to miss," Sneijder said of the shootout. "I think there was only one team that wanted penalties and that was them [Argentina]. And yes, they won, so well done to them. Its all about taking responsibility in those situations, and sometimes [in shootouts] things can go wrong. But of course I am sad." Sneijder scored a crucial equalizer in the 88th minute against Mexico in the round of 16 to help the Dutch advance, while his side was on the opposite side of a shootout against Costa Rica in the quarterfinals. The Netherlands has yet to win a World Cup despite playing in the finals three times, while the Dutch have now lost twice in the semifinals as well. For now the Dutch will once again have to settle for the role of bridesmaid, and while both teams would like to go out with a win, Saturdays match doesnt figure to offer much solace for either side. Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer will continue training Shared Belief at Golden Gate Fields in the San Francisco Bay area until just before shipping to Santa Anita. Hes done that every race, Hollendorfer said Friday morning at Santa Anita. Hell come down here and just go over the track a couple of days like he did last time (before the Awesome Again) and that will be how we prepare. Hes doing real well. Last month the 3-year-old gelding won the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita over older horses to keep his career mark perfect in seven starts. I watched him gallop (Thursday morning) at Golden Gate. Ill train him up there and then well ship down here in a big box stall for the Breeders Cup, Hollendorfer said.dddddddddddd Were hoping thats a good formula. Having him at Golden Gate seems to be the answer for this horse. Shared Belief missed the Triple Crown races, beginning his season with an allowance victory at Golden Gate Fields on May 26. Weve been able to keep his feet good up there, so its working. His works are going to be mostly maintenance-type works, but we might give him one good blast up there before he comes down, the trainer noted. Partly owned by Hollendorfer and Jim Rome, Shared Belief has banked $1,552,200 with wins this year in the Los Alamitos Derby and Pacific Classic. As a 2- year-old in 2013, Shared Belief was perfect in three starts, including the Hollywood Prevue and CashCall Futurity, both at Hollywood Park. ' ' '

Cavs officials met with James agent, Rich Paul, this week about the free-agent superstars possible return. The sides visited as James continued his family vacation, a person with knowledge of the details told The Associated Press on Thursday night. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks. It was not immediately clear if owner Dan Gilbert was at the meeting. James recently opted out of the final two years of his contract in Miami. The two-time NBA champion has gone to four straight finals with the Heat. However, after the team was throttled by San Antonio in this years finals, James said he would weigh his options this summer. One of them could be re-signing with the Cavs, the team he spent seven seasons with before leaving in 2010 to join forces with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in South Florida. Wade and Bosh also opted out of their deals with Heat, raising speculation the "Big Three" could be headed in different directions. James decision to leave Cleveland -- Thursday was the four-year anniversary of the teams last pitch to him -- prompted Gilbert to condemn him in a scathing letter to Cavs fans. The owner also told The AP he felt James had quit during games in the playoffs. ESPN has reported that Paul also met with representatives for the Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks. A photo of Mavericks owner Mark Cuban in Cleveland circulated on Twitter, though he said he was there for a commitment for his TV show, "Shark Tank." While James has been out of the country with his wife, Savannah, and their two sons, Paul has been working on the four-time MVPs future. Unlike four years ago, when teams flocked to Cleveland to make presentations to woo James, the courtship of him this time has been low key and rather business-like. The Cavs have waited patiently for their chance to try and convince the Akron, Ohio, native to come home. In the past few weeks, the Cavs have hired new coach David Blatt, selected Kansas swingman Andrew Wiggins with the No. 1 overall pick and gotten All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving to agree to a five-year, $90 million contract extension. Now, theyre working on bringing back James, who has never ruled out the possibility of a return.dddddddddddd Two years ago, James was asked if he could ever see himself playing for the Cavs again. "I dont know. I think it would be great," he said. "It would be fun to play in front of these fans again. I had a lot fun times in my seven years here. You cant predict the future and hopefully I continue to stay healthy. Im here as a Miami Heat player, and Im happy where I am now, but I dont rule that out in no sense. "And if I decide to come back, hopefully the fans will accept me." Cleveland fans, most of them anyway, have gotten over James infamous "Decision," when he announced he was leaving on a nationally televised special. He was booed mercilessly in his first games back with the Heat, but in recent years he has been received more favourably. Maybe thats because the Cavs havent been to the playoffs since he left and Clevelanders know he might be the only chance they have to see a championship in their lifetimes. Cleveland hasnt won a title in any of the major sports since 1964. If he were to come back, James could repair the damage he did to his image when he left. But that remains a big if. In having Paul meet with other teams, James could simply be putting on pressure for the Heat to upgrade their roster. Miami has been pursuing free agents and Yahoo Sports reported team president Pat Riley and coach Erik Spoelstra met in Los Angeles with Lakers free agent Pau Gasol. The Heat could have trouble surrounding James with enough talent if the reports he will only accept a maximum contract are accurate. James is scheduled to be in Las Vegas next week to host a basketball camp, and then is expected to attend the World Cup in Brazil. In order for James to play again in Cleveland, he and Gilbert would have to have some sort of reconciliation. Gilberts letter -- famously typed in comic sans font -- was a blistering attack on James, who had carried the Cavs to the NBA Finals in 2007 but failed to deliver on his promise of a championship. Gilbert had guaranteed the Cavs would win a title before James, but later regretted the prediction. "Looking back now, that probably was not the most brilliant thing Ive ever done in my life," Gilbert said. He and James may get a second chance together. ' ' '

DURHAM, N.C. -- Nobody expected Vermont to give No. 6 Duke much of a scare. Yet the Catamounts found a way to score seemingly at will against a program built on defence, and they came perhaps a moment shy of pulling the biggest upset of the young season. Duke needed a free throw from Rodney Hood with 5 seconds left and one final defensive stand to hold off Vermonts upset bid and beat the Catamounts 91-90 on Sunday night. Hector Harold scored 24 points and Clancy Rugg finished with 20 for Vermont (1-5). The America East favourites lost their fourth straight, dressed only nine healthy players but gave Duke all it could handle with by far its best shooting performance of the season. They "came into Duke with no pressure on us, and we played like there was no pressure on us," coach John Becker said. "Maybe this is a lesson learned for our guys." Vermont shot 64.8 per cent -- by far, its best performance of the season and the worst defensive showing by Duke. "We compete and play defence every game and every day at practice," Becker said. "Tonight, the ball went through the basket, and we were able to hang around with a really good team." Candon Rusins four-point play with 10.4 seconds left for Vermont tied it at 90. Hood brought the ball downcourt, drove the lane and drew contact from Rugg. Hood bounced his first free throw off the rim, then swished the second. Sandro Carissimo hurried the Catamounts downcourt and found Rusin in the corner, but he couldnt get a shot off before the buzzer. "We didnt win this game," Hood said. "We kind of deserved to lose the game, and we got lucky." Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said the Catamounts "were terrific." "And we were awful," he added. Jabari Parker scored 26 points in his sixth straight 20-point performance. Hood finished with 22 for Duke (5-1), which extended its nonconference winning streak at Cameron Indoor Stadium to 106 games. Barely. "We played like a team that thought we would just show up and win," Krzyzewski said. "Thats how you get beat." Andre Dawkins scored 16 points and Quinn Cook added 14 for the Blue Devils. Cook broke a tie with a 3-pointer with just under 2 minutes left that made it 86-83. They stretched their lead to 88-84 on Rasheed Sulaimons free throw with 40.8 seconds to play before Carissimo made it a two-point game with his tip-in with 29 seconds remaining. Cook seemingly gave Duke a cushion when his two free throws with 19.4 seconds left made it 90-86 -- but when Sulaimon fouled Rusin on his deep 3-pointer, the Catamounts had another chance. Carissimo finished with 16 points and Luke Apfeld had 10 for Vermont, which fell to 3-17 against ACC schools and is winless against all of them except for Boston College. Yet the Catamounts looked plenty capable of taking advantage of a ripe Duke team that struggled all night to stop them. "Were not connected on the defensive end," Hood said. When the Blue Devils built a 61-49 lead on Parkers steal and fast-break dunk with 15 1/2 minutes left, that looked like the spark that would get the sluggish Duke defence going. Instead, Vermont reeled off 10 straight points after that as part of a 13-2 run. Harolds three-point play pulled the Catamounts to 63-62 with just over 11 minutes left. Carissimos free throw with 7:50 left tied it at 71. Harolds 3 from the key about a minute later put Vermont up 74-73 -- its first lead since early in the first half -- and neither team led by more than four points the rest of the way. SUN CITY, South Africa -- The first time he met Nelson Mandela, Gary Player got on his knees and kissed the former political prisoners feet. Remembering his "very tearful" first encounter with Mandela, the nine-time major winner paused Friday to compose himself and hold back more tears. Mandela, the beloved former South African president and Nobel laureate, died Thursday at 95. Renowned as a fierce competitor on the golf course, Player was invited to meet Mandela at his office in Johannesburg after the anti-apartheid leaders release after 27 years in prison. But he didnt expect to do what he did, Player said. "I knelt down and I kissed his feet and I said, I have never kissed anybodys feet in my life, and I said, I have so much admiration for you. I said to him, It is remarkable, how can you not have revenge?" Mandelas reply, according to Player, was: "You have got to start a new life and forgive and go ahead." Player, speaking at the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City, said Mandelas ability to inspire with compassion left him amazed then -- and still does. "It was very tearful for me, because when you think of a man that has gone to jail foor all those years for doing the right thing, not the wrong thing, it is hard to comprehend that a man can come out and be like that," Player said.dddddddddddd "He was an exceptional man." From that first meeting, Player and Mandela would cross paths regularly as the golfer, one of South Africas greatest sportsmen, worked with the president on charity projects. Once, Player remembered with a big smile, Mandela landed at a charity tournament in a helicopter to lend support. "I had to meet him when the helicopter arrived and open the door. Now I had been around him all these years raising money for young black children and I opened the door, and he says Good morning Gary, do you remember me?" Player recalled, imitating Mandelas unique rasping voice. "Just wonderful." Although Player wasnt sure if he ever saw Mandela swing a golf club, he knew that the anti-apartheid leader "realized the value of sport" and even followed Players career overseas while he was imprisoned by South Africas former racist regime. "He said to me, When I was in jail, I used to watch you playing. He was very complimentary," Player said. ' ' '

FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- Lorie Kane shot a 2-under 70 in tricky wind conditions Saturday for a share of the lead with Laurie Rinker in the Legends Championship. Rinker had a 73 to match Kane at 3-under 141 with one round left in the Legends Tour event at French Lick Resorts Pete Dye Course. Val Skinner was a shot back after a 70. "But I feel a couple years older after that round," she said. Skinner made a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 17 and closed with another birdie. "Youve got to get control of your ball," Skinner said. I think hes being smart, allowing me to say, OK, lets sit this game, and not put up a fight and just trusting in me. I thought that was big for us.Bryant skipped three games in four days surrounding Christmas due to an overall soreness, missing the Lakers upset win over Golden State before a brutal back-to-back road trip in Chicago and Dallas. The third-leading scorer in NBA history played just six games in the previous 18 months before this season due to two major injuries. Although he has looked much like his former self for long stretches this season, Bryant has been more aware than ever of his susceptibility to fatigue and injury, and hes handling himself accordingly.II just think he understands right now that he has to get as much as he can out of his body while he can, and then sometimes were going to have to sit down, Scott said.dddddddddddd The body will get you to change a little bit when it starts talking to you. I think we all know that Kobe is one of the smartest players in this league, so he starts to listen, just like everybody else. After showing up to Staples Center more than three hours early for a pregame workout, Bryant largely ran the point in the opening minutes against the Suns, focusing on playmaking instead of the physical grind of being a scorer. He had made just 29.2 per cent of his shots in his last five games before his rest.Scott hopes to reduce his minutes from their current 35.4 per game, aiming to play Bryant roughly 32 minutes each night. Bryant also is still skipping most practices with his teammates, although he chafes against that restriction. But Scott cant promise Bryant wont play extra minutes if a game is on the line for the Lakers, who are still scuffling at the edge of respectability despite their injury woes.He only knows one way to play, Scott said. If hes on the court, hes going to play all-out. He doesnt take plays off, so you know youve got to sometimes save a guy from himself. ' ' '

BRUINS FINISH RED WINGS The Boston Bruins calmly dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, with a 4-2 win Saturday afternoon, wrapping up their first-round series in five games. While the series was short, it was relatively competitive but, in the end, the Bruins simply had too much. In Game Five, the Red Wings had a goal and an assist each from Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg -- and contributions from their superstars may have been their best chance for the upset -- but it wasnt enough. Boston got a goal and an assist from LW Milan Lucic and two assist from D Torey Krug on their way to the second round. The tough part for the Red Wings is that they couldnt get any production out of the young forwards that had played such vital roles this season. LW Tomas Tatar, C Riley Sheahan and RW Gustav Nyquist were held off the scoresheet in all five games and the tendency might be to think that these inexperienced forwards were overmatched in the moment, but they were Detroits best puck possession trio in the series, all three on for better than 58% of shot attempts at 5-on-5. Yet, there was ultimately some dissatisfaction from the Wings, who needed goals, not possession. In the series-deciding game, which Detroit trailed for 42 minutes, Nyquist played only 11:55, a threshold he surpassed in 44 of the previous 45 games. Detroits uphill battle was made steeper by the fact that G Jimmy Howard missed the last two games with a suspected concussion. Jonas Gustavsson actually played well, stopping 66 of 72 shots (.917), but its tough to upend the Bruins with a second-string goaltender. Datsyuk, playing on a bad knee, finished with five points in five games and was the only Red Wing with more than two points in the series. The Bruins emerged from the series, relatively easily, even though David Krejcis line struggled in possession terms. It certainly didnt hurt to have G Tuukka Rask at the top of his game, stopping 146 of 152 shots (.961) in the series. C Patrice Bergeron and Krug tied for the Bruins team lead with five points in the series. Lucic, RW Jarome Iginla and D Dougie Hamilton each had four points. That the Bruins young defencemen were able to contribute offensively proved to be a real advantage. The series win sets up Boston for a matchup with their rivals from Montreal. The top-seeded Bruins will be favoured, but the head-to-head matchups with the Canadiens have been tumultuous, dramatic affairs (well, forever, but also) in recent seasons, so it should be a fascinating battle. PENGUINS TAKE SERIES LEAD Perhaps feeling a little threatened, with the series tied 2-2, the Pittsburgh Penguins came out firing in Game Five and dominated play on their way to a 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The margin could have been much if not for the play of Blue Jackets G Sergei Bobrovsky, who stopped 48 of the 50 shots he faced. As the Penguins made a concerted effort to play Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin together on the top line, it turned out that Pittsburghs best possession numbers came from the second and third lines. Lee Stempniak, Brandon Sutter, Jussi Jokinen and Beau Bennett were each on the ice for more than 70% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. Pittsburghs depth was also boosted by the presence of C Marcel Goc, who played 10:34 in his first game since suffering an ankle injury March 27. The possession domination for Pittsburgh, naturally, had a counter in Columbus, where Jack Skille, R.J. Umberger, Nick Foligno and Artem Anisimov were each below 30%. Penguins D Brooks Orpik missed the game with an undisclosed injury, giving Robert Bortuzzo an opportunity to play his first NHL playoff game and Bortuzzo didnt hhurt the Penguins in 13:36 of ice time.dddddddddddd While there has been criticism of Sidney Crosby for his play in this series, it needs to be said that his play is probably better than fine. After 11 individual shot attempts, and one assist, in Game Five, Crosby has five points and a in five games and has been on the ice for 60.1% of the shot attempts during 5-on-5 play. His LW, Chris Kunitz, had a goal and an assist, with seven shots on goal and six hits, in Game Five. This hasnt been an easy series for the Penguins, by any stretch, and theyre still trying to do it with the second-best goaltender in the series, but their skill advantage has been enough to give them the lead in the series. ROCKY MOUNTAIN WAY Trailing 2-1 into the third period of Game Five, the Minnesota Wild scored twice in the first 6:25 of the third period to take the lead and appeared on their way to taking the game, before the Avalanche scored with 1:14 remaining to tie it, then finished matters 3:27 into overtime. In the end, the 4-3 overtime win gave the Avalanche a 3-2 series lead. The winning goal was authored by Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon, who finished the game with a goal and two assists, giving him a playoff-leading 10 points thus far. Hes three points away from Jaromir Jagrs scoring record for an 18-year-old rookie in the postseason. MacKinnon played 21:56 in Game Five, second among Colorado forwards, behind only Paul Stastny (22:38); MacKinnon, who averaged 17:21 of ice time per game during the regular season, has played more than 21 minutes in four of five games in the series. The sequence leading up to the game-tying goal was contentious. There was an apparent holding penalty that was ignored in Colorados defensive zone, with the net empty, and then the Avalanche appeared to be offside seconds before PA Parenteau buried the tying goal. This is what is known as "getting the breaks." Avalanche LW Cody McLeod scored a goal, but was obliterated at even-strength, on for two shot attempts for and 17 against (10.5%). With McLeod off the ice, the Avalanche had 56.2% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. For the Wild, LW Matt Moulson, C Mikko Koivu and D Marco Scandella were on the ice for at least two-thirds of the shot attempts at 5-on-5, though Scandella was unfortunate enough to get beaten by McKinnon on the winning goal. Its been a close series to this point, though the Wild have held the possession edge, and it shifts back to Minnesota for Game Six. Colorado may get a boost with C Matt Duchene nearing a return to the lineup. If Duchene is ready to go, that ought to help Colorados cause. KINGS KEEP ON KEEPING ON Facing elimination for the second time in the series, the Los Angeles Kings stormed into San Jose Saturday night and outplayed the Sharks from the get-go, building a 3-0 lead 22 seconds into the second period before chilling out and taking that lead to games end. The Kings had outshot the Sharks 19-6 by the time they had taken that 3-0 lead, chasing Sharks G Antti Niemi. Not only did the Sharks lose the game, but also lost D Marc-Edouard Vlasic was hurt (upper-body injury) on a run-in with Kings C Jarret Stoll. It cost Stoll two minutes for roughing, but Vlasic did not return. If hes not able to play in Game Six, thats a huge blow to the Sharks.. Kings RW Justin Williams had a game-high seven shots on goal (11 shot attempts), leading the Kings on ice for 73.1% of shot attempts. Kings G Jonathan Quick stopped all 30 shots sent in his direction, a decided improvement after some rough games earlier in the series. While the Kings are trying to make the unlikeliest of comebacks, from being down 3-0, if they manage to get good goaltending from Quick, maybe its possible. CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- Drawing hard lessons from the Lance Armstrong scandal, global anti-doping authorities are set to move into a new era with tougher sanctions, smarter testing and a new leader. The World Anti-Doping Agency is also pushing to catch drug cheats by pursuing investigations and gathering intelligence -- rather than relying on the blood and urine samples which proved so unsuccessful with Armstrong, a serial doper who never failed a test. A series of proposed changes to the World Anti-Doping Code will be voted on at the World Conference on Doping in Sport, to be held next Tuesday through Friday in Johannesburg. The revised code will take effect on Jan. 1, 2015 -- in time for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. "Weve got a budget of not even the salary that Wayne Rooney earns at Manchester United," WADA director general David Howman told The Associated Press. "I think what you have to do is say, Right, how do you make the bucks you have go as far as they possibly can to get rid of those rotten apples?" In the most obvious deterrent, WADA is proposing to double the standard ban for serious doping offences from two years to four years meaning cheaters would miss at least one Olympics. The move appears to have widespread approval. While current rules allow for four-year bans in aggravated cases, the longer sanctions are rarely enforced and most federations keep to the standard two-year penalty. A previous IOC rule that banned dopers from the next Olympics was ruled invalid by the Court of Arbitration for Sport so WADA consulted a judge at the Court of Human Rights to make sure the latest four-year proposal would stand up to legal challenges. "I cant see it not being accepted to be honest," U.K. Anti-Doping chief executive Andy Parkinson said. WADA is also re-examining testing procedures, placing more importance on police-style investigations and extending the reach of anti-doping agencies to give harsher punishments to the coaches and trainers, the so-called "athlete entourage" that assists in doping -- all factors in Armstrongs case. Armstrong was "surrounded by a lot of rotten apples," Howman said. WADA also proposes lengthening the statute of limitations in doping cases from eight to 10 years. That would allow the storage and re-testing of samples for up to a decade. With these changes being considered, WADA will elect a new president. Craig Reedie, an International Olympic Committee vice-president from Britain, is the only candidate. He is set to succeed former Australian government minister John Fahey as WADA president, taking over on Jan. 1, 2014. New IOC President Thomas Bach also will attend the conference, underlining his commitment to a "zero-tolerance" approach on doping. And away from the code, WADA and national anti-doping agencies may look to repair broken relationships with some sports. Reedie, close to the federations, may be the right person to lead the move toward detente after previous clashes between the agency and federations, including over allegations that cycling body UCI protected Armstrong or was complicit in his doping. Newly elected UCI President Brian Cookson will be in Johannesburg. Delegations from Jamaica and Kenya also are expected, giving WADA an opportunity to make progress behind the scenes on anti-doping shortcomings in those countries. WADA has already inspected the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission over a breakdown in the testing of its world-beating sprinters in the run-up to the London Olympics last year. WADAs executive committee will likely examine the Jamaica report when it meets on the first day of the conference. Kenya is being scrutinized for a sudden spike in doping offences and the lack of progress in an investigation promised by sports and government authorities a year ago. WADA will meet with Kenyan officials in Johannesburg. Howman praised the United States Anti-Doping Agency for a "superb job" to help bring down Armstrong, who was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life. After years of denials, the cyclist admitted to doping after a USADA investigation exposed evidence of his systematic cheating. Howman said some of USADAs work "merits looking at (for) changes that are required in other anti-doping organizations." Despite USADAs eventual success, Armstrongs career still stands as a stark reminder for authorities who couldnt catch him for years. A report commissioned by WADA and delivered this year said drug-testing had been "generally unsuccessful" in catching dopers. The findings from a team led by former WADA head Dick Pound called for the doping body to "readjust its focus." Taking away findings for substances like marijuana and asthma medications, less than 1 per cent of the 250,000 drug tests now administered at huge cost every year were producing positives, the report found, showing no improvement since 1985. Howman said WADA had "totally" taken on board recommendations with regard to testing shortcomings. In one proposed change, the code wants to ensure that testing is smarter and federations tailor it to substances more common to their specific sport. "We have a task to tell the sports what substances they must be testing for," Howman said. Jachai Polite Youth Jersey . Mark Gastineau Youth Jersey . - Playing a road game against a division rival raises the intensity for linebacker Clay Matthews.RENTON, Wash. -- Earl Thomas is the latest member of the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks to be locked up for the future. The best free safety in the NFL is getting rewarded quite well. Thomas and the Seahawks reached agreement Monday on a $40 million, four-year contract extension with just over $27.7 million guaranteed, according to two people with knowledge of the agreement. They spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because there had been no announcement from the team. The agreement was first reported by NFL.com. Thomas, a two-time first-team All-Pro, could have gone into the 2014 season with free agency on the horizon. Instead, Seattle made sure to keep the most important cog of its defence through the 2018 season. Its the latest move in a strong off-season for the defending champions. While there were losses in free agency and difficult roster decisions with expensive veterans released, Seattle re-signed defensive end Michael Bennett before free agency began, then locked up coach Pete Carroll with an extension through 2016. The debate was whether Seattle could get a long-term deal done with either Thomas or cornerback Richard Sherman before either became a free agent after the 2014 season. Thomas deal is finished and the Seahawks can turn their attention toward trying to get a deal done with Sherman and solidifying three-fourths of the top secondary in the NFL for years to come. Strong safety Kam Chancellor is already signed through the 2017 season. Thomas was Seattles second first-round pick in the 2010 draft, the first with Carroll and general manager John Schneider leading the franchise. Its turned out to be one of the most important selections the team has made since starting a makeover with the duo in charge of moulding the Seahawks into a championship club. "Earl is as sserious a competitor as you could ever hope to be around.dddddddddddd He is in it, and hes on it and dialed in," Carroll said before the Super Bowl. Thomas was Seattles second-leading tackler last season and added five interceptions, but its what his presence allows the Seahawks to do defensively that underscores his value. His speed in coverage and recognition in the secondary are among the best in the game. Much of what Seattle wants to do defensively is predicated on having Thomas on the roster. At one point early in his career, Carroll had to threaten Thomas with benching because he was trying to do too much. Thomas was getting out of position and being undisciplined in his assignments. As he matured, those mistakes became harder to find. Thomas recognition of what opponents were trying to run became so good that he could play alone in the back of Seattles defence. Often this past season, the Seahawks were able to move Chancellor closer to the line of scrimmage and ask Thomas to patrol the back end by himself. He did that job at an elite level and earned his second straight All-Pro selection. "In this defence, I think me and Kam do a lot. Sometimes dirty work, sometimes a lot of game-changing plays," Thomas said during Super Bowl week. "Everybody on the defence understands that. Thats why this defence is so compatible with each other. Its selfless guys. "Were going to put everything on the line for each other. Love is the highest frequency we have and we understand that, and thats what its all about. When youre filled up with gratitude, its a genuine appreciation for everybody around you. Thats the way I love it." Thomas has 15 career interceptions in the regular season and two more in the playoffs. Thomas will still only be 29 years old when his new deal expires after the 2018 season. ' ' '

Andre Drummond recorded 23 points and 14 rebounds, while Josh Smith, Greg Monroe and Jodie Meeks scored 12 points apiece. Meeks made his Detroit debut and missed the start of the season with a balky back. We showed a lot of resolve and came out with a great win, Drummond said. DENVER -- Gabriel Landeskog scored twice and Semyon Varlamov stopped 30 shots, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night and a 2-0 series lead. The Wild were unable to contain the quickness of teenager Nathan MacKinnon, who had a goal and three assists. Stastny, the star of Game 1, also had a goal and three assists. His empty-netter sealed the win after Marco Scandella made it a one-goal game with 1:19 remaining. Charlie Coyle also scored early for the Wild. Game 3 is Monday in Minnesota. Landeskogs second goal of the game gave Colorado a 3-1 lead with 8:01 remaining in the second and led the Wild to pull erratic starter Ilya Bryzgalov. Backup Darcy Kuemper stopped all 14 shots he faced, possibly opening up a goaltender controversy. Varlamov bottled up the Wild most of the night to help Colorado hold serve at home. The Avs are 12-0 in playoff series when capturing the first two contests since relocating to the Mile High City in 1995-96. The 18-year-old MacKinnon is having quite an NHL post-season debut. The Wild simply couldnt slow down the speedy MacKinnon, the first pick in the draft last summer. He blew past Wild defenders all evening and now has seven points in the series. In the opening game, Colorado rallied for a 5-4 win when Stastny scored the tying goal with 13.4 seconds remaining and then the OT winner. This time, no late-game theatrics were necessary. No bold decisions by coach Patrick Roy, either. Roys goalie simply played that well and only got stronger as the game went along. So, too, did the chants of "Varly, Varly, Varly," from the capacity crowd. Varlamov showed the form that led to 41 wins in the regular season, which broke Roys team record. He allowed a late goal by Scandella, but Stastny ended any drama with his goal in the waning seconds. Roy kept the line of Landeskog, Stastny and MacKinnon together. No surprise, really, since the trio shined since being paired late in Game 1. They combined for 10 points on Saturday. Landeskog scored his first goal of the game on a nifty no-look pass from MacKinnon. He added another when MacKinnon beat a Wild defender, dished it over to Stastny, who made a spin pass to Landeskog. The captain lined it over Bryzgalovs shoulder. That was the end of Bryzgalovs night as Minnesota coach Mike Yeo sent in Kuemper. Bryzgalov struggled in both games in Colorado, giving up eight goals on 45 shots. Coyle put the Wild up on a crazy play early in the first period. Mikko Koivu sent a pass toward the goal that bounced off Varlamovs stick and hit a hard-charging Coyle just before he and defenceman Jan Hejda crashed into the goal, knocking the net off its pegs. The officials reviewed the play and confirmed Coyles second goal of the series. Two minutes later, MacKinnon took a pass at his own blue line, flew past two Wild players at centre ice, weaved between two defenders and lined a shot over Bryzgalovs arm. The Avalanche have adopted the motto "Why not us?" this season, putting the mantra on shirts, ball caps and even flashing it on the scoreboard. The slogan took root when Roy posed that question when he first came on board. It was taken to heart in October after former Avs defenceman Ray Bourque addressed the team at his restaurant in Boston. "This motto became pretty big and something we started to believe in," Maxime Talbot said. "So, why not us?" NOTES: Wild F Dany Heatley was a scratch. ... Colorado will likely be without its leading scorer Matt Duchene (knee) for this series, Roy said after the morning skate. ... Roy said F John Mitchell (head) is "not close" to a return. ... The Avs are now 6-0-1 against the Wild this season. ... Avalanche F P.A. Parenteau had a cut under his left eye after being hit by a stick late in the third period, but returned to the ice. Well decide upside, potential, "bouncebackability", projects and projections after a wild night in the borough of Brooklyn. What grade does Raptors President & GM Masai Ujiri get for his first draft in Toronto? Griffin: Incomplete. Watching Ujiri talk about Bruno Caboclo, he seems like a GM "once bitten, twice shy" after not stealing The Greek Freak, Giannis Antetokounmpo in the draft last year. Im really befuddled by this. I spoke to my man Mota Elb (@MotaElb) who played in the same Brazilian League as Bruno. Mota said hes a good talent, but not a great talent compared to who hes facing down there. Its a very odd pick at #20 with guys like Shabazz Napier still on the board. ...But in the end, "In Masai We Trust". International scouting is something Ujiri is exceptional at, so we have to wait and see with this one. Strickland: Is "Work In Progress" a real grade? I have to issue an incomplete. Pretty sure anytime you hear that your first round draft pick is "two years away from being two years away", it doesnt instill fan confidence in the quality of the selection. The Brazilian Kevin Durant, Bruno Caboclo, will have the opportunity to prove all the naysayers wrong as Ujiri wont stash him away in Europe, bringing him to Toronto to begin the process now. Watson: Incomplete. While the selection of Bruno Caboclo left everyone scratching their heads, it remains to be seen if he will be the next Kevin Durant or the next Rafael Araujo. Ujiris track record at the helm of the Raptors has earned him the benefit of the doubt. How DeAndre Daniels and Caboclo pan out in the short term will define Ujiris grade. With a Canadian going #1 in the NBA Draft for the second year in a row, what does this say for the future of basketball in Canada? Griffin: I love the moment when ESPN put up banners of Wiggins, Stauskas, and Ennis, while Bill Simmons & Jalen Rose called out Americas youth to pick up their game or start playing hockey. It was a backhanded compliment to how much basketball has grown in Canada. This is not a flash in the pan; this is not a fluke. People talk about these guys as the leaders of a "Golden Generation", but I believe its something bigger than that. Canadian kids are putting down hockey sticks and picking up Naismiths game. The stats dont lie. Scouts like Tariq Sbiet are saying that our youth programs are just chalk full of excellent, high level players. Were looking at the start of movement towards Canada becoming a dominant basketball country. And the basketball globe finally has our attention. Strickland: If having the #1 pick in two straight NBA Drafts coming from above the 49th Parallel doesnt convince the rest of the hoops world that there is major talent in Canada, nothing will. With this great wealth of talent comes a greater responsibility, however. As Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, Tristan Thompson, Cory Joseph and other young Canadian NBAers find success in the league, the pressure on them to grow national pride for the sport will come only as a result of competing and possibly winning a medal on the global stage by or before the 2020 Olympics. Watson: It says that Canadians have the ability to go #1 just as other nations athletes can, the talent is there. The Canadian Basketball program has to develop its team to get the players to commit and play together, developing international experience in order to become a contending basketball power. After three Canadians were taken in the first 18 picks, why were no more selected? Griffin: International trade law. Nah, Im really not sure. There were 8 Canadians Draft eligible (which is amazing in its own right) and most of them will receive summer league and camp invites. Khem Birch could have possibly stayed in school another year, but hindsight is 20/20. Yet, I cant harp on this enough: Melvin Ejim will have a solid NBA career if given the opportunity in the right system. He just needs a little faith from a GM who doesnt measure talent by height alone. Overall, I expect to see the undrafted guys busting their butts this summer to land that roster spot. Now with so many Canadians in the leaggue, there is that motivation and beacon of hope here to actually live that hoop dream.dddddddddddd Strickland: If weve learned anything, it should be that this talent assessment and drafting thing is far from an exact science. Canadian hoops fans should respect the fact that there was top heavy Canadian content in this draft, with 3 of the 4 selected overall out of 8 eligible going in first 18 picks. Perspective matters. Even still, its hard to fathom that the player of the year from one of the top conferences in the country in Melvin Ejim wasnt selected at all. Watson: While only three Canadians were taken in the first 18 picks, Dwight Powells second round selection made four for a record amount of Canadians taken in the draft. It is another landmark moment for Canadian basketball, slowly showing that Canada is becoming a hotbed for hoops talent. Which team came out best in the Draft? Griffin: Orlando. I elicited the help of draft wunderkind Phil Boileau (@SportingPhil) on this one. The Magic picked up two starters who fill immediate roster needs. No one else did that. Aaron Gordon is a monster talent with athleticism, versatility, and an NBA frame. Hell figure out the league quick. Likewise, Elfrid Payton looks like a steal at #10. Small school, great hair, big heart. And hes really driven. ...Phoenix made my sneaky favorite pick of the draft taking Tyler Ennis at #18. Hes a perfect fit for their system. And for Ennis to learn from Goran Dragic who learned from Steve Nash, thats pretty damn fitting. Strickland: With obvious, easy bake nods to Cleveland and Milwaukee, as well as a dark horse pick in Phoenix, the Orlando Magic got a bigger, stronger, faster more athletic Shawn Marion in Aaron Gordon at #4 and a serious sleeper in Elfrid Payton to help Victor Olidipo harass NBA backcourts. Whether Duane Watsons buddy Jacque Vaughn is the man to lead them to great heights may be in question. But there are some serious pieces in the Magic Kingdom again, including the monster double-double machine Nikola Vuvevic. Orlando could make a 2013-2014 Washington Wizards-leap toward respectability next season. Watson: Bostons youth movement took another solid step with the addition of Marcus Smart who couldve been a lottery pick in last years draft and James Young, who stood out for the Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA Championship game. Two players who can step in right away and help turn around the Celtics. Danny Ainge wins again. Which team fared the worst in the Draft? Griffin: Philadelphia. Go ahead and send me hate mail. Joel Embiids medical dossier scares the living tar out of me. Hes extremely talented, yes, but two stress fractures and a broken foot is red flags, loud sirens, and Sam Bowie flashbacks for me. Plus his small frame and the plopping motion of his feet as he runs, I dont like the equation at all. Listen, I think hes an all-world talent in a league that lacks dominant BIGS, but this is too huge of a risk at the #3 spot in a very deep draft. I wish him well and hate all the memes already. But talk to Anthony Bennett, Embiid has a tall mountain to climb after all these setbacks. ...On the positive side, I absolutely love Phillys new Ben Franklin logo. Yup. Thats the silver lining here. Strickland: Ok, Ok, Ok!!! Who gets to play the bad guy and say the Raptors? That said, it wont be me! Sam Hinkie doesnt care whats said about his picks for the Philadelphia 76ers. If your asset management strategy is a Fran Fraschilla quote (see: Caboclo, Bruno), may the long-suffering Sixer fan base get Tylenol and Pepto instead of pizza or burgers every time a team scores 100+ on them... and may Mr. Hinkies domicile, email address and cell phone numbers be unlisted. Watson: Oklahoma City Thunder. For a team that proved in the NBA Playoffs it needed support for their dynamic duo of Durant and Westbrook, they missed the boat. The collective response to Steven Adams being drafted last year was collective disbelief. But the Kiwi panned out to be an All-NBA Rookie Second Team selection. However, at #21 this year, Mitch McGary is a duplicate of last years pick. The Thunder has built themselves on draft picks, but Sam Presti and company whiffed on this one. The Three-Man Weave contributors are co-hosts of TSN Radio 1050s 1-on-1 with Will and Duane, Will Strickland (@WallStrizzle1) and Duane Watson (@byDuaneWatson) and guest first-round draft pick Marc Griffin (montrealmarc). ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals got just enough hitting to save Trevor Rosenthal. Matt Carpenter homered, doubled and drove in three runs and Adam Wainwright tied for the major league lead with his 15th win in a 7-6 victory over the San Diego Padres 7-6 on Sunday. "Our offence did a great job, put us all on their back," Wainwright said. The 24-year-old Rosenthal is among the major league leaders with 36 saves in 40 chances in his first season as closer. He walked the bases full with a strikeout in the ninth and Seth Maness gave up a two-run single to Abraham Almonte before earning his second save in two chances. "We needed to get him some help," manager Mike Matheny said. "We didnt feel like we were going to sit around and watch too much without giving him a break." Three walks was a career worst for Rosenthal, who has walked five his last two appearances along with three hits and three runs in 1 1-3 innings. The hard-throwing righty and his manager believe its a timing issue and not about fatigue. "Physically, everything feels pretty good," Rosenthal said. "I think its just going to be narrowing the sights a little bit, or maybe not trying to do too much." Rosenthal is among the league leaders with 57 appearances. "Weve worked him pretty hard and were going to be very careful about how we move forward," Matheny said. "Were not afraid to use the other guys in our bullpen to pick up the games when he cant. "But as far as his role, hes our closer." Jon Jays two-run single highlighted a four-run first inning when the Cardinals batted around against rookie Odrisamer Despaigne (3-4). Peter Bourjos and Tony Cruz each had an RBI single for St. Louis, which took three of four in the series. Despaigne needed 37 pitches to get out of the first. "He just couldnt finish off any hitters," manager Bud Black said. "He couldnt get any of his pitches where he needed to get them." Carpenters two-run double off Tim Stauffer in the sixth made it a three-run cushion for Wainwright (15-7), who joined the Reds Johnny Cueto at 15 wins. Milwaukees Wily Peralta was seeking his 15th later Sunday. Wainwright allowed three earned runs in seven innings with five strikeouts and one walk, overcoming a handful of rough patches. He hasnt felt locked in for a while. "Its been a grind for over a month now," Wainwright said. "Im about ready for it to end." Wainwright is 5-0 at home with a 1.55 ERA against the Padres, so this was one of his stiffer tests. "We did a nice job of laying off the breaking balls as the game went on," Black said. "We put together some better swings." Alexi Amarista and Yangvertis Solarte had an RBI apiece in the San Diego fifth. Jake Goebbert had an RBI triple and scored on second baseman Kolten Wongs wild relay as the Padres pulled within 5-4 in the sixth. First baseman Matt Adams made a nice defensive stop to rob Seth Smith of a game-tying hit for the second out in the ninth. TRAINERS ROOM Padres: 3B Solarte has started the last two games after missing a pair with a mild left oblique strain. Cardinals: OF Matt Holliday got a day off with a minor knee problem, plus has been scuffling at the plate, going 0 for 18 the previous five games. UP NEXT Padres: Ian Kennedy (9-10, 3.54) and San Diego open a three-game set against the Dodgers Kevin Correia (1-0, 1.50). Cardinals: Justin Masterson (6-7, 5.58) faces the Reds and Mike Leake (9-11, 3.59) on Monday. Masterson is coming off seven scoreless innings against the Marlins, the best of three starts since arriving at the trade deadline. STRONG STROKE Jay is 12 for 24 during a nine-game hitting streak and is batting .417 this month. Jay also was hit by a pitch four times in a span of five plate appearances on Friday and Saturday. The veteran kicker repeatedly bailed the team out with his powerful leg, setting numerous franchise records along the way.Hes about to establish another team record — though its clearly one hed rather do without. With two games left before the Raiders (2-12) put the wraps on another disappointing season, Janikowski is on pace to have the fewest field goal attempts over a 16-game season in franchise history. Its not that the coaching staff has lost faith in the former first-round draft pick.In one of those rare statistical oddities, Oakland is last in the league in total offence and 31st in points yet owns the NFLs top red zone offence. The Raiders are scoring touchdowns from inside the opponents 20-yard line at a 75 per cent clip, essentially eliminating the need for the field goal unit. Its frustrating more than anything because you want to be out there trying to help the team win some games, Janikowski said. I never think about how many field goals I kick, I just want to win. I knew it was low.Janikowski has never attempted fewer than 25 field goals in any season since entering the NFL as the 17th overall pick in 2000. At his current rate, hell finish with 19 this year.Thats one fewer than the current team record of 20, shared by Errol Mann (1978) and Jeff Jaeger (1990).The upside is that despite the few opportunities hes had, the 36-year-old Janikowski has quietly rebounded nicely from one of the worst seasons of his career. Hes converted 15 of 17 atttempts and is one of 10 kickers in the league with a success rate of 88 per cent or better this year.dddddddddddd.Still, Janikowskis overall numbers have suffered because of Oaklands success in the red zone. The Raiders have scored touchdowns on 18 of 22 trips inside the 20.Though he will finish as the teams leading scorer for a 15th consecutive year, Janikowski has gone four games without a single field goal attempt — the longest streak of Janikowskis career when healthy.Weve just been efficient down there in scoring touchdowns, Raiders interim coach Tony Sparano said Friday. Its been a scenario where we havent had to kick field goals, which is a good thing. But when we need one hes there and I know that we can count on him.Janikowski wasnt even aware of his low numbers until being told by a reporter. He pondered the thought briefly, shrugged his shoulders and smiled. When youre into the game, you always kick three, four field goals a game, Janikowski said. Now Im averaging one a game or whatever that is.Oakland hosts Buffalo on Sunday, and Janikowski is 6-for-6 in field goal attempts against the Bills.Notes: CB Tarell Brown (foot), WR Vincent Brown (groin), CB Chimdi Chekwa (hamstring), TE Brian Leonhardt (concussion), WR Denarius Moore (knee/ankle) and RT Menelik Watson (foot/ankle) did not practice and will not play against the Bills. ... CB DJ Hayden (back) was limited and is questionable. ... CB TJ Carrie, who is probable with a sore ankle, is expected to start in place of Brown.___Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '

LONDON - Croatia midfielder Niko Kranjcar was ruled out of the World Cup in Brazil on Monday with a hamstring injury that will sideline him for up to six weeks. The playmaker ruptured a muscle in his hamstring during Queens Park Rangers 1-0 win over Derby in the second-tier League Championship playoff match at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Kranjcar is on loan at QPR from Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv. Croatian national-team doctor Boris Nemec is quoted in a statement released by QPR as saying Kranjcars "rupture is some inches wide and will need between four and six weeks to heal." The 29-year-old was one of 12 midfielders included in Croatias provisional 30-man squad named on May 14. He was expected to be in the final group of 23 players due to be announced by head coach Niko Kovac on Saturday. Croatia plays the opening match of the World Cup, against Brazil on June 12. The Knicks are two games behind the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference race. BOULDER, Colo. -- For a team that built its reputation on stifling defence, fourth-ranked Arizona sure showed some offensive prowess Saturday night. The Wildcats routed the Buffaloes 88-61 for their first win in Boulder since 1973. They did it by holding Colorado without a bucket until 9:50 remained in the first half, then by shooting 84.6 per cent in the second half. "They whipped us tonight every which way you can whip a team," Colorado coach Tad Boyle said. Freshman Aaron Gordon shook off a poor performance at Utah last week by scoring 21 of his season-best 23 points in the second half and Nick Johnson added 20 points for the Wildcats, who made 22 of 26 shots after halftime. "Weve had a few shootarounds here, we felt comfortable in their gym, it all just clicked for us," Johnson said. It was a rare breather for the Wildcats (25-2, 12-2 Pac-12), who scrapped their way through a series of close games since beating Colorado by 12 in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 23, before close losses at Cal and archrival Arizona State dropped them from the top spot in the AP Top 25. After that first game in Tempe, Buffaloes forward Xavier Johnson dissed the Cats, saying, "theyre not that good." He also said that even without injured star Spencer Dinwiddie, the Buffaloes were the more talented team and he suggested the rematch in Boulder would be a blowout. He was right, but it was the Wildcats who made this one a laugher, not the Buffaloes, who were throttled by Arizonas suffocating defence and their hot shooting hands. "I dont think you have any of our players saying anything negative about Colorado, saying, Were going to win by 20," Arizona coach Sean Miller said. "We dont do that. For us, we have to play the right way. We have to compete hard. And certainly we respect Colorado." Coming off an emotionally draining win over the Sun Devils on Wednesday night that burnished their NCAA tournament credentials, the Buffaloes (20-8, 9-6) came out ice cold, missing their first 14 shots. They trailed 22-5 before Jaron Hopkins sank a 3-pointer from the left side 10:10 into the game. That sparked a 16-4 run by Colorado -- with seven points coming from the free throw line -- to make it 26-21 and force an Arizona timeout. The Wildcats settleed down thanks to a baseline drive by Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and a pull-up jumper by T.ddddddddddddJ. McConnell. The only field goal by a Buffaloes starter before halftime came on Askia Bookers jumper with 2 seconds left in the first half. After a horrendous start, however, the Buffaloes clawed their way back before Gordon sank three straight layups and Johnsons jumpers helped the Wildcats pull away. In celebration of senior night, Boyle gave 7-foot centre Ben Mills his first start of his career. He took the place of Josh Scott, who had started every game since Feb. 27, 2013, when he was dealing with a concussion. Scotts absence was quickly felt as Colorado was outrebounded 6-1 and fell behind 8-1 before Scott replaced Mills 2:49 into the game. But the Buffaloes didnt turn things around right away, as the Wildcats built those advantages to 10-3 on the boards and 14-3 on the scoreboard by the 14:39 timeout. Thanks to a 12-3 advantage at the stripe, however, the Buffs trailed just 31-25 at the half after shooting 6-for-27 from the floor. Scott, who led the Buffs with 18 points, sank a jumper to open the second half that made it a four-point game, but the Buffs couldnt get any closer and the Wildcats began to pull away when Kaleb Tarczewskis 3-pointer made it 40-33. "I think we got a little jump shot-happy, but I think thats a credit to them," Scott said. "I think we turned the ball over a couple of times at some key points in the game and its mainly because they pack the paint." About the only thing the crowd had to cheer about by the end was Mills 3-pointer in the final minute, the first of his college career. The 27-point loss was the biggest at home in the Boyle era, and he said it was particularly disconcerting with ESPNs College GameDay crew in town. "Our fans were so ready for this game, for this win, and we gave them nothing," Boyle said. "Thats a sick feeling to go home with and to live with. I havent been embarrassed many times as a coach, but I was embarrassed tonight at the way our team played." His players were, too. "Were all embarrassed, man, really embarrassed," Booker said. "This is something that, whether were on the road or at home, this should never happen again." ' ' '
