OTTAWA -- It was ugly and costly, but in the end it was a win for the B.C. Lions. A pair of Paul McCallum field goals were enough to lift the Lions to a 7-5 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday night. "It was one of the ugliest games Ive seen in a long time," McCallum said. "Weve got a lot of work to get going the way we should. When you hold a team to that few points your defence is doing well, but offensively you have to do better as a team." It was also a successful return to action for Lions quarterback Travis Lulay -- at least until the last minute of the game, when Lulay left the field clutching his shoulder with 46 seconds remaining. Lulay, who completed 18 of 27 passes for 167 yards on Friday, was making his first start in almost a year after injuring his throwing shoulder in a goal-line collision last September. "Hes being evaluated by the doctors," Lions coach Mike Benevides said of Lulay, who wasnt made available to the media after the game. "Well find out more as the night goes on." Added running back Andrew Harris: "Honestly my heart sunk to my stomach. The guy had battled back so hard and he plays with so much heart." The team had hoped the six-year veteran would be ready following off-season shoulder surgery, but his first start didnt come until the Lions (6-4) 10th game. Lulay used his feet more than his arm in the win as he was the games leading rusher with 50 yards in his return to action. Though the Lions seemed happy with the outcome of the game, Harris said he certainly was not pleased with the way it came about. "When youre frustrated you have to be able to make plays. I dont miss balls but I jumped up and misjudged it and dropped it," Harris said of a third-quarter incompletion. "But it was a whole offensive failure. It was a team thing and as an offence we should all be embarrassed." The Redblacks (1-9) defence kept Lulay and the Lions out of the end zone all night, but the Redblacks offence struggled once again, getting just a field goal. "Weve got all the tools here, we just need to use them and both sides of the ball we need to get better, no matter what," Redblacks defensive back Matt Albright said. "Were right there. We know it and we just have to push through it. You can never give up in football and its time to step up." The Redblacks had their chances throughout the game. Henry Burris completed 21 of 32 passes for 188 yards and an interception. Midway through the fourth quarter, Ottawa took possession of the football before a torrential downpour along with a strong easterly wind ensued. The Redblacks persevered and managed to get into field goal range, where a successful attempt would have given them a one-point lead with four-and-a-half minutes to play. Holder Danny OBrien couldnt handle the wet ball on the snap though, and the Redblacks turned the ball over on downs. "With the rain driving like that you keep thinking the odds are against us, but we just have to keep working," said Redblacks receiver Marcus Henry, who finished with four catches and 51 yards. Moments later, the referee suspended play due to lightning in the area. Play resumed after a 21-minute delay. The Lions used up all but 30 seconds on the clock and the Redblacks failed to gain any ground in the dying moments. Earlier in the half, punter Ricky Schmitt booted a 69-yard single for a 7-5 B.C. lead. The first half began and ended with fields, one by each side as the Lions went into the break with a 6-5 lead. On the opening drive of the game, the Redblacks used two completions to get into field goal range before Maher connected from 35 yards to give the Redblacks a 3-0 lead. The big play of the drive was a 26-yard completion to Henry, one of 13 completions for Burris in the first half. The Redblacks did have some success moving the ball in the second quarter but an interception by Burris early in the quarter was returned 34 yards by Dante Marsh to the Ottawa 51-yard line. Five plays later, McCallum kicked a 49-yard field goal to tie the game. On the next series, a couple of elusive moves by Burris, a third down conversion and a B.C. penalty gave the Redblacks a first-and-goal on the Lions eight-yard line. After hauling in a Burris pass though, Chevon Walker fumbled and the Lions took over on their own one-yard line. "Theres some plays we could have made in (that drive) better. But (Walker) was just trying to make a play to get in the end zone and ended up getting hurt on it," Henry said. "Well find a way to push us over the edge." The Redblacks defence tackled Harris in his end zone for a safety and a 5-3 Redblacks lead. McCallums 34-yard field goal on the last play of the half got the Lions their first lead of the game. SAN FRANCISCO -- All-Star Scott Kazmir capped the best first-half of his career with one of his best starts yet. Kazmir struck out nine in seven scoreless innings to help the Oakland Athletics win the annual Bay Bridge series by beating the San Francisco Giants 6-1 on Thursday. "I felt good from pitch one," Kazmir said. "I felt comfortable. I was able to get some quick outs and use all of my pitches." Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer and Stephen Vogt drove in three runs for the As, who won three of four in the two-city series that began Monday night in Oakland. The As (58-34) have won seven of eight overall and have matched the best start in Oakland history. But it seems so far that theyve brought in the right players so far. So I think its definitely on the up and up over there." Like Toronto, the early days were bleak in Salt Lake. The team went 5-22-5 with just 20 points in its inaugural season in 2005. In 2005-06, the fledgling franchise endured a league-record 18-game winless streak. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- For the second consecutive night, the Memphis Grizzlies slowed down Houston and walked away with a win. Mike Conley scored 17 points, Zach Randolph had 15 points and 17 rebounds, and the Grizzlies nearly held the Rockets to their lowest output of the season in a 99-81 victory Saturday. "We tried to slow them down," Randolph said. "They like to get up and down the court. They like to run and gun. We just tried to get back and play and get stops." The formula was similar to Friday, when the Grizzlies won 88-87 in Houston, but this time Memphis took control early. The Grizzlies held the Rockets to 37 per cent shooting and built the lead to as many as 27 points before both teams sent in reserves to finish the game. Courtney Lee also had 15 points and Kosta Koufos scored 14, hitting seven of his eight shots from the field. James Johnson added 12 points for Memphis and Nick Calathes had a season-high 11. James Harden led the Rockets with 16 points, and Chandler Parsons scored 11. Dwight Howard had 10 points and 12 rebounds, but Houstons three-game road winning streak was snapped. "The last two games weve been terrible offensively," Parsons said. "Their pace works for them. They make you play a half-court offence. They are physical. They grab. They reach. They hold. Winnipeg will be eliminated from playoff contention with another defeat as the Lions are four points ahead in the race for the crossover spot in the CFL West.Even if Winnipeg wins, the Blue Bombers would need a lot of help for a playoff spot to be possible. CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- Drawing hard lessons from the Lance Armstrong scandal, global anti-doping authorities are set to move into a new era with tougher sanctions, smarter testing and a new leader. The World Anti-Doping Agency is also pushing to catch drug cheats by pursuing investigations and gathering intelligence -- rather than relying on the blood and urine samples which proved so unsuccessful with Armstrong, a serial doper who never failed a test. A series of proposed changes to the World Anti-Doping Code will be voted on at the World Conference on Doping in Sport, to be held next Tuesday through Friday in Johannesburg. The revised code will take effect on Jan. 1, 2015 -- in time for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. "Weve got a budget of not even the salary that Wayne Rooney earns at Manchester United," WADA director general David Howman told The Associated Press. "I think what you have to do is say, Right, how do you make the bucks you have go as far as they possibly can to get rid of those rotten apples?" In the most obvious deterrent, WADA is proposing to double the standard ban for serious doping offences from two years to four years meaning cheaters would miss at least one Olympics. The move appears to have widespread approval. While current rules allow for four-year bans in aggravated cases, the longer sanctions are rarely enforced and most federations keep to the standard two-year penalty. A previous IOC rule that banned dopers from the next Olympics was ruled invalid by the Court of Arbitration for Sport so WADA consulted a judge at the Court of Human Rights to make sure the latest four-year proposal would stand up to legal challenges. "I cant see it not being accepted to be honest," U.K. Anti-Doping chief executive Andy Parkinson said. WADA is also re-examining testing procedures, placing more importance on police-style investigations and extending the reach of anti-doping agencies to give harsher punishments to the coaches and trainers, the so-called "athlete entourage" that assists in doping -- all factors in Armstrongs case. Armstrong was "surrounded by a lot of rotten apples," Howman said. WADA also proposes lengthening the statute of limitations in doping cases from eight to 10 years. That would allow the storage and re-testing of samples for up to a decade. With these changes being considered, WADA will elect a new president. Craig Reedie, an International Olympic Committee vice-president from Britain, is the only candidate. He is set to succeed former Australian government minister John Fahey as WADA president, taking over on Jan. 1, 2014. New IOC President Thomas Bach also will attend the conference, underlining his commitment to a "zero-tolerance" approach on doping. And away from the code, WADA and national anti-doping agencies may look to repair broken relationships with some sports. Reedie, close to the federations, may be the right person to lead the move toward detente after previous clashes between the agency and federations, including over allegations that cycling body UCI protected Armstrong or was complicit in his doping. Newly elected UCI President Brian Cookson will be in Johannesburg. Delegations from Jamaica and Kenya also are expected, giving WADA an opportunity to make progress behind the scenes on anti-doping shortcomings in those countries. Howman said some of USADAs work "merits looking at (for) changes that are required in other anti-doping organizations." Despite USADAs eventual success, Armstrongs career still stands as a stark reminder for authorities who couldnt catch him for years. A report commissioned by WADA and delivered this year said drug-testing had been "generally unsuccessful" in catching dopers. The findings from a team led by former WADA head Dick Pound called for the doping body to "readjust its focus." Taking away findings for substances like marijuana and asthma medications, less than 1 per cent of the 250,000 drug tests now administered at huge cost every year were producing positives, the report found, showing no improvement since 1985. Howman said WADA had "totally" taken on board recommendations with regard to testing shortcomings. In one proposed change, the code wants to ensure that testing is smarter and federations tailor it to substances more common to their specific sport.
