HOUSTON -- Gregorio Petits wife Yessica didnt come to Friday nights game because she had a headache. She thoroughly regretted her decision after Petit hit his first career home run to help the Houston Astros to a 3-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The homer put Houston on top in the eighth inning and the Astros held on for the victory, snapping Torontos six-game winning streak. "My wife is mad because she didnt come to the game," Petit said. "I got like seven messages, all smiling faces. It wasnt really smiling, but crying faces all over in my phone. (She said) I wont forgive myself for this. I missed the first one. He tried to console her. "Its OK," he said he told her. "You could YouTube it." The game was tied at 1-1 when Petit launched Aaron Loups first pitch into the first row of the Crawford Boxes in left field to give the Astros the lead. Jose Altuve connected on the next pitch by Loup (3-3) for a ground-rule double before stealing third base. "I threw two pitches and the next thing you know I give up a home run and a double," Loup said. "I guess it just wasnt my day today." Houston got an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Robbie Grossman. Jose Veras (1-1) got the last two outs of the eighth inning for the win and Chad Qualls threw a scoreless ninth for his 12th save. Melky Cabrera singled with one out in the first and reached third on a single by Jose Bautista that crashed off the wall in left field and knocked a number out of the scoreboard there. The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Dioner Navarro. Toronto starter J.A. Happ gave up three hits and one run with six strikeouts in seven innings. Happ retired the first 11 batters he faced before Chris Carter singled on a dribbler with two outs in the fourth inning. Matt Dominguez drew a walk before Carter scored on a single by Guzman to tie it at 1-1. Houston starter Collin McHugh did not factor into the decision after allowing five hits and a run in 6 1-3 innings to remain winless since June 3. Jake Marisnick, acquired Thursday from the Marlins as part of a six-player deal that sent right-hander Jarred Cosart to Miami, went 0 for 3 in his Houston debut. MOUND WORK The game was delayed in the third inning when the Astros complained about the mound being too soft. Three members of the grounds crew came onto the field with rakes and other tools and worked on it for several minutes. McHugh threw a few warmups pitches after they finished and the crowd cheered as the workers walked off the field and the game continued. SPELLING TEST? The Astros had a bit of fun teasing rookie pitcher Mike Foltynewicz about his difficult to spell last name on his first day in the clubhouse after being called up from Triple-A on Friday. They used tape to spell his name phonetically (Fultynevichz) and affix it to the nameplate above his locker. He got a good laugh out of the ribbing and said theres no trick he can give them to help make spelling it easier. "I had trouble when I was younger, too," he said. "I dont think anybodys going to really get it right ... they can just keep it nice and short and call me Folty." TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Infielder Brett Lawrie (broken right index finger) began a rehabilitation assignment with Class A Dunedin on Friday. Manager John Gibbons said he will probably need at least a week of rehab games before hes ready to return to the team. Astros: Rookie OF George Springer, on the disabled list since July 20 with strained left quadriceps, is inching closer to his return. "Hes taking batting practice," manager Bo Porter said. "He was able to do the outfield work (Friday). So were pretty excited that hes coming along well." Guzman left the game after the fourth inning with back spasms. He was replaced at 1B by Jon Singleton. ON DECK Torontos R.A. Dickey looks for his third straight win when he opposes left-hander Brett Oberholtzer when the series continues on Saturday. Oberholtzer is coming off a win over the As when he allowed three runs in 6 2-3 innings. Sam Mills Saints Jersey . Roy says he will know more about Duchenes potential playing status Sunday. Duchene has been out since damaging the MCL in his left knee when he ran into a teammate against San Jose on March 29. Hes been skating on his own all week, before joining the team Saturday hours before a pivotal game in a series tied at 2. Catch the game on TSN starting at 4pm et/1pm pt. Saskatchewan kicked off the campaign with five straight victories and wins in eight of its first nine games, but then the Riders hit more than a few stumbling blocks which included a four-game slide and back-to-back defeats to close out the regular season, which is why they are playing this weekend and not enjoying added time to prepare for the division final. The Lions, who were immediately in chase mode as they tried to catch up to Saskatchewan, managed to produce a couple of three-game win streaks this year and also posted consecutive triumphs in the final weeks in order to match the Riders record overall. The Lions will be without MLB Solomon Elimimian, who did not make the trip with a leg injury. Last season, BC was the clear-cut, regular-season leader with a 13-5 record, winning the West Division by a game over Calgary, while the Roughriders finished two games below .500, but because the bottom teams in the East Division were worse than the rest of the teams in the league, Saskatchewan was given entrance into the postseason where it bowed to the Stampeders in the semifinals by a score of 36-30. With Calgary advancing to the division finals in 2012, the Lions ended up having their hands full and eventually suffered a 34-29 loss at home. With regard to success in the playoffs over the years, more specifically each teams response to playing in the Grey Cup, the Roughriders have had the worst luck of any active club in that title tilt over the years. Saskatchewan has appeared in a total of 18 Grey Cups, but taken home the prestigious trophy a mere three times. The last of those championships came in 2007 when the team topped Winnipeg at Rogers Centre, 23-19. Saskatchewan has appeared in the championship game two times since winning it all, but in 2009 the Riders suffered a narrow 28-27 setback to Montreal and then a year later it was the same story versus the Alouettes, this time being a 221-18 final.dddddddddddd British Columbia has appeared in the fewest Grey Cup Championships of any of the current eight league members, only 10, but still the Lions have twice as many trophies as the Roughriders. It was just two years ago that the Lions posted a 34-23 win over Winnipeg in their home stadium, BC Place. This year the challenge might be a bit bigger for the Lions, seeing as how they fielded their third different starting quarterback of the season in their final outing, a 26-7 victory over visiting Calgary on Nov. 1. In that contest, Buck Pierce took the field for the Lions, although so did Thomas DeMarco and Travis Lulay, even though there really was nothing left to play for with the playoff picture already set. Lulay will get the start against the Roughriders. While there was some uncertainty at quarterback for the Lions this season, it shouldnt come as much of a surprise to find that the squad ranked next-to- last in the league with just 4,408 passing yards and produced an efficiency rating of 88.4. Over on the other side, Darian Durant was one of the most reliable passers as far as durability was concerned, starting all but two games, one of which was the season finale. Durant may have had some trouble with overall accuracy at times, but in the final tally he still led the league with 31 passing TDs, against just 12 INTs. In addition to having a solid passer orchestrating the offense for the Riders, the defense was also something to behold as it led the league in points allowed at 22.1 ppg. In terms of their matchups during the 2013 regular season, these teams played a total of three times, all within a span of just five weeks between Sept. 22 and Oct. 19, with the Roughriders posting back-to-back victories after dropping the first encounter by a mere two points, 24-22. The latest triumph was a lopsided 35-14 final at home for a Saskatchewan team that scored 21 points in the second quarter and 31 in the first half in order to pull away for the comfortable victory. The team that survives this battle will be back in action next week against Calgary in the West Division Finals, for the right to take part in the 101st Grey Cup at Mosaic Stadium later this month.
