Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Knile Davis scored two touchdowns and the Kansas City Chiefs avenged a Week 12 loss with a 31-13 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Davis caught a 70-yard touchdown pass and also had a 3-yard rushing score, while Travis Kelce caught five passes for 59 yards and a touchdown for the Chiefs (8-6), who ended a three-game skid which began with a 24-20 loss to the Raiders on Nov. 20. Alex Smith completed 18-of-30 passes for a season-high 297 yards and two touchdowns, Jamaal Charles carried the ball 12 times for 52 yards and Dwayne Bowe and Albert Wilson each finished with three catches for 69 yards in the win. Derek Carr threw for 222 yards and a score on 27-of-56 passing, James Jones caught a short TD pass and Sebastian Janikowski made two field goals for Oakland (2-12), which has dropped two of its last three games. The Chiefs extended their lead to 17-6 with 6:46 remaining in the third quarter. Bowe hauled in a 21-yard pass and a roughing the passer call moved Kansas City to Oaklands 32. After two more first downs, Davis bounced off a hit and plowed into the end zone from three yards out. Frank Zombo recovered Carrs fumbled snap and the Kansas City offense took over at the Oakland 21. On the next play, Kelce made a catch on the right side of the field, cut towards the middle and fought off a leaping defender at the goal line for a 20-yard score and a 24-6 lead with 5:50 to play in the third. On Kansas Citys ensuing drive, Smith was sacked for a 2-yard loss on second down, but Davis raced 70 yards down the field after catching a short pass for a 31-6 lead. Carr drove the Raiders to Kansas Citys 32-yard line midway through the fourth, but Brice Butler was stopped two yards shy on fourth down, resulting in a turnover on downs. After Cairo Santos missed a 47-yard field goal, Carr drove the Raiders 63 yards down the field. The rookie signal-callers pass to Jones from a yard out with 37 seconds remaining accounted for the final score. The Raiders caught a break on what couldve been a disastrous play in the first. Carrs pass bounced off Latavius Murray and into the hands of defensive end Jaye Howard, who was unable to hold on to the ball at the Oakland 20. Kansas City, however, didnt wait too long after to get on the board as DeAnthony Thomas returned Marquette Kings ensuing punt 81 yards for a touchdown with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter. Early in the second, Kelces 16-yard catch moved the Chiefs into Raiders territory. Frankie Hammond picked up another first down on a 7-yard catch, but Smiths scramble on third down was a yard short. Kansas City elected to send out the field goal unit, and Santos 44-yard try steered wide left. After another Oakland punt, Smith aired out a 48-yard bomb to Wilson to move the Chiefs down to the Raiders 29 and Santos was true from 41 yards out for a 10-0 lead with 8:01 left in the second. Janikowski put the Raiders on the board with a 53-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to make it 10-3 at halftime. Smith completed a 3-yard pass to Kelce, but he was hit and the ball popped out and into the hands of C.J. Wilson, who took the ball down to the Chiefs 15. Oakland just gained one yard on the drive, but Janikowski made it a 10-6 game by splitting the uprights from 33 yards out early in the third. Sam played at Missouri, and came out as gay in media interviews earlier this year. His team and coaches knew his secret and kept it for his final college season. He went on to have the best season of his career: He was the Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year. "Thank you to the St. Louis Rams and the whole city of St. Louis. Im using every once of this to achieve greatness!!" Sam tweeted with a frenzied typo moments after he was picked, including a picture of himself wearing a Rams cap and a pink polo shirt. The pick came after several rounds of suspense. The first round of the day came and went, no Sam. Then the second, and the third, and finally, the day was down to just a handful of picks. When Mike Kensil, the NFLs vice-president of game operations, walked to the podium at Radio City Music Hall in the drafts final minutes to announce the Rams second-to-last pick, the crowd got a sense something was up. Very few of the last day picks were announced at the podium. Twitter lit up with suggestions the Rams were about to make news. When Kensil said: "The St. Louis Rams select ... Michael Sam..." the fans gave a hearty cheer, chanting "Yes! Yes! Yes!" and "Michael Sam!" Sam was in San Diego watching with friends and family at the home of his agent, Joe Barkett of Empire Athletes. ESPN and the NFL Network had cameras there and showed Sams reaction. Sam was on the phone bending over, with his boyfriend hugging him and rubbing his left bicep. When Sam got off the phone, the tears started. He gave his boyfriend a big kiss and a long hug as he cried and his eyes reddened. After, they shared cake -- and another kiss. Sam will start his professional career not ffar from the place where he played his college ball, with three former Missouri teammates.dddddddddddd The 6-foot-2, 255-pound Sam was considered a mid-to-late round pick, far from a sure thing to be drafted. He played defensive end in college, but hes short for that position in the NFL and slower than most outside linebackers, the position hell need to transition to at the professional level. He was taken with the 249th overall pick out of 256. Players from Marist, Maine and McGill University in Canada were selected before Sam. "In the world of diversity we live in now, Im honoured to be a part of this," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said during an interview on ESPN. The impact of Sams selection goes far beyond football. At a time when gay marriage is gaining acceptance among Americans, Sams entry into the NFL is a huge step toward the integration of gay men into professional team sports. Pro sports have in many ways lagged behind the rest of society in acceptance. Publicly, most people in and related to the NFL have been supportive of Sam. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said Sam would be welcome in the league and judged solely on his ability to play. A few wondered whether teams would be reluctant to draft Sam because of all the media attention that would come with it. Fair or not, the NFL -- coming off a season in which a bullying scandal involving players on the Miami Dolphins was one of the biggest stories in sports -- was looking at a possible public relations hit if Sam was not drafted. He would likely have been signed as a free agent and given a chance to make a team in training camp, but to many it would have looked as if he was being rejected. Now that hes there, it could be seen as an opportunity for the NFL to show that crass locker room culture is not as prevalent as it might have looked to those who followed the embarrassing Dolphins scandal.
